R*SC*R...slapping down my .02

by GMpartsgu » Sat, 15 Feb 2003 08:53:14

I run this newsgroup through IE and a broadband account. Looking back about
a month, im seeing about 10 to 20 new posts a day on average. This is
including the recently fired up R*SC*R posts. Comparing this to the other 8
or 10 NG's i use as well, this is a fairly average number (on average :)).
Very rarely in the 3 years or so i have been lurking around here, have i
seen anyone do a mass posting like was done yesterday. It wasnt meant to
disrupt or trash the room. It was meant to grab the attention of a group of
semi-casual racers for the purpose of organization. Seeing how ive watched
the R*SC*R group sprout up on R.A.S, the point of the posts being off topic
or inappropriate is without merit. I place this argument in the same box
with the replies to common questions posted as "why dont you search google
before you come here".
Maybe im all ***ed up inside, but i have always considered newsgroups to
be basically one thing; a group of people dedicated to the same interests
that share knowledge and help each other without question. Sure, some do
this task more cheerfully than others, but thats thats life. Tolerance.. How
hard is it to deal with life a little. In the past 24, i have seen people
foam up at the smallest details. Even arguing about top posting and every
other thing. Shamefull.
It truly is the poor musician who blames his instrument. Everyone out here
is capable of sifting what they see. If the RCAR thing aint yer thing, wash
it out.
One world. One R.A.S.. Or some campy bullshit like that :). Phew, i need a
beer. Thanks fer listening..

Thanks for throwing some fuel on the fire.  Hoping to see some big
explosions were we?  Most of us had finally given up beating our heads
against the wall and implemented a filter and now someone decides to use
R*SC*R in the heading.  Nice work.

Do you mean 10-20 new threads?  I check usenet about once every 12
hours and average 150 new posts each time.  However most of those are
stuffed away in threads I'm not reading, and I generally see maybe 10
new threads a day.

The only time I personally get annoyed by people on usenet is when
they either a.) post in HTML or b.) use a shitty non-RFC compliant
news reader (i.e. Outlook Express) that doesn't thread their posts
properly.

Jason,

What is non-RFC compliant mean and what newsreaders are RFC compliant?  What
do you recommend as a newsreader.  I do use Outlook Express and don't think
it's that great (although I don't think it doesn't thread my posts
properly).

TIA.

I gave Forte Agent a go but it's horrendously overrated.  Might be OK for
leeching *** from binary groups....dunno.

RE: Agent...

Oh, man do I agree with you.  I can barely forgive myself for paying for
that POS a few years ago.

It's the most convoluted, confusing, pain-in-the-ass to use newsreader I've
ever seen.

Features have been 'tacked onto the end' for years.  Nothing has ever been
re-organized to turn it into a efficient, logical interface.  It has so many
different preference and option panes, scattered heavens knows where, that
you can't find shit when you need it.

And to this day (up to version 1.8) it STILL can't sort by subject and group
by thread at the same time.

I don't even think I have my serial number any more.

Larry

Agent does handle binaries very well, but the interface for reading and
composing posts is very poor compared to OE.
