Here I am, sitting 5th on the start, waiting for the green
to drop. Damage and Yellow turned on. No pace.Qaulified around
194.5xx. The green drops and I get blown away by at least 4 or
5 cars, until I get up to speed. I'd like to know if most front
runners are using manual shift. Using a T1 myself, <sigh>, I have
no choice but to use auto shifting. We all know how good the T1
shifter is <g>. I'm not asking for anyone to "give up" their setup
secrets. I need to know if I need to work on my gearing or take the
plunge and get a TSW or ( is it ECC) , for better shifting.

There goes my phone bill AND credit card!

I almost never have a problem shifting with my T1.  When I do it's
usually my fault.  When shifting up I place the ball of the stick just
above the heel of my hand.  I place my fingers up on the dash and push
the stick forward.  The important thing to remember is "release" after
shifting.  Totally relax your hand or remove it from the stick.  To
shift down, I wrap my fingers around the ball of the stick and place my
thumb on the box-base of the shifter and pull back.  Again, it is VERY
important to totally relax or remove your hand from the shifter.  If the
shifter doesn't reset itself, the next movement is not registered.

Let me revise that...  I was trying to recreate what I do when I wasn't
doing it...  To shift down I wrap my fingers around the ball of the
stick and place the heel of my hand ont he box-base of the shifter and
pull back.

This method of shifting is how I learned to shift 4 or 5 on the floor...
You put the hand away from the direction you will be shifting.  Actually
now that I think of it that's how I was taught to shift on the column
to.  Most people just grab the handle and move the shifter.  But the
pros push or pull the shifter.  This method makes it less likely to miss
the gear you are aiming for.

Hope this helps...

Well Don,

You could try running a little shorter 3rd gear.  Don't go
overboard, but maybe just a couple of hits on the shorter side.  That
should help you accelerate on the start.  You could work with making
the 4th gear shorter as well, but I wouldn't suggest it, as doing this
will change your trap [top] speeds and everything, but you can work
with it and see what you come up with.

As far as manual and automatic shifting, I have found that manual
will help you accelerate faster because YOU tell the computer when to
shift.  I found that, when shifiting into fourth gear, it is usually
better to let the needle go a little past 9,000rpms before shifting.
That might provide a little better acceleration.  I don't know much
about a T1; I have a T2 but don't know the differences.  If you don't
want to shift with your T1, maybe you can setup the controls so that
you can use the keyboard to shift.  (Can you do this?  ???)  You know,
maybe page up to shift up, page down to shift down, whatever.  Well,
good luck...

I think it's more the gear ratio in 1st (and maybe 2nd gear) that give
the others that advantage from a standing start.

True they can change gears to get an advantage on the standing start, but you
can't get something for nothing.  To get the kind of jump that some do, you
wind up sacrificing speed in turn 2 and the back straight due to change in
gearing.  The setup I'm using is not the fastest into turn 1, as I usually get
passed by one or two cars.  But once I hit second and third gears in turn 2
and the back stretch, 90% of the time I've moved up to between first to third
place by turn 3 (from a usual qualifying spot between 4th to 10th).

actually theres a "glitch" that allows the other cars tires to heat up
much faster than yours and get the jump on starts and restarts

Precisely, how does one "implement" this glitch :>
