Why race Talledega?

Can someone explain to me the fascination with Talledega?  To me it's the
least interesting track.  Not a realistic sim of Talledega? No pedal work?
No real competition from the AI cars?  Maybe it's just too subtle for me.

And I don't understand why the people who are complaining about bad
drivers on Hawaii would ever race Talledega, where the bad drivers can
stay close.  How about C***te?  Strategy - use your mirrors, if a clown
approaches from behind stay high and pass them underneath as they slide up
in the turn (just like Dale E.).  You're gone and only have to worry about
lapping them.

I'm with you on this, but I think the attraction is speed and close racing.
95% of the speed comes from the setup, which makes it an easy track for
rookies, just d/l a setup of the net and your pretty competitive.
Unfortunately, most of them try to run 3 and 4 wide into the turns and it
doesn't work unless everybody holds their line perfectly. I think most guys
think the lanes in the turns are just eye candy, but they are there for a
reason.

To get your rating up. As I've noted in r.a.s before, the skill system is
biased towards large races and Talladega attracts the largest crowds. I
avoided Dega like the plague after the first couple of nights, but could
never find more than 4 or 5 other guys who wanted to race the other tracks.
Meanwhile, I'm watching guys who can barely keep the car pointed nose-first
pass me up in skill level. So I ran a few Degas and my skill level went
from 5 to 7 in 2 days.

The problem with this strategy is that they are just as likely to take you
out when they try to go under you. I am convinced that the best strategy is
to enter a closed race series with people that you trust to race
door-to-door. Unfortunately, this probably won't satisfy my lust for speed
completely, and I'll continue to run pick-up races, but I'm learning who to
avoid.

Hey, me too! I think I'm finally getting a handle on the Glen, Sears Point
is next. BTW, the best qual times at SP in multi-player are 92's, and I
heard somebody got a 93 the other day.

In Talladega the lanes *are* just eye-candy. If the track was
realistic, and you could race 2-3 wide and maintain speed (i.e., as on
the real Talladega) they would be there for a reason, as is in Nascar
they are pure eye-candy.

For fun I like 200 laps at Bristol Damage on no pace no yellow. Just like
Enduros I run at my local short track.

It would be nice if you could run 2-3 wide and stay even through the turns,
but you can't (YET). That doesn't lessen the importance of having lane
markers, unless you think we should all just line up single file and follow
each other around until the checkered flag.

If someone gets under you going into the turn, it is your responsibility to
move up into the 2nd lane and give them room to pass. That's what the lane
markers are there for. Yes, it will cost you some time (not speed), but at
least you're still racing, instead of a pile of sheet metal on the infield
grass. I've found that pulling into the second lane in T1 just long enough
to let them pass under me, then ducking in behind them, I can get enough of
a draft to pass them back going into T3.
