Installed Nascar 4 and got wheel not connected

by lg042- » Fri, 04 Jan 2002 18:56:20

I've just installed Nascar 4 on my old W98 box but I couldn't even have a
try because my MS Sidewinder Wheel does not work anymore : I get a "not
connected" status. I found some docs at support.microsoft.com but couldn't
sort it out. Can anybody help me?

I am also thinking about upgrading my W98 to W2k. But, as I can read a lot
of posts in the archive, I wonder if GPL will still work correctly. Is there
something special to do ?

Thanks.

Did you recently install CM2.0 by any chance?

Launch N4 then go into Options/Controllers and choose Optimized
Driver.. Recently after reinstalling Win98 it won't see my TSW2, but
N4 will if I choose Optimized Driver instead of Direct Input Driver..

I'm about to install this under WinXP.  Is there something I should be aware
of ?

TIA

No problem on XP that I noticed. On Win98 CM 2.0 would overwrite a .dll file
that the MS wheel uses and would show a "not connected" error afterwards.
The fix is at the Codemasters site. You just have to replace the bad .dll
with one from your Win98 cdrom to clear up the issue. When I installed CM
2.0 on XP though I didn't get that problem and it was probably because XP is
a protected OS and won't let apps/games just arbitrarily overwrite system
files. I installed Swat2 the other day and after the install XP pops up a
message saying the game overwrote some files and XP needs the cdrom to
replace them with good copies from the cdrom. Yay XP! Damn games have no
place overwriting system files unless I allow it.

I wonder if something like this is causing my frame rates to take a hit
using a msff in N4. I use my regular wheel and no problems (W98se, gf3)
however when going to ff and the MS wheel N4 visibly slowed down and gpl was
affected but not that much (hard to notice).

I would like to use this wheel (USB) but not under these conditions. any
advice?

Ok, cool.  Thanks :)

You're right.  They have no business messing with Windows standard system
files, and should be taken to task for such poor programming practices.

On _some_ systems, the MSFFW (I think it's the SideWinder Software) has been
known to 'eat' a few fps along the way.

My direct input doesn't work either. I have to use optimized. Doesn't anyone
know why? I also have Win98.

Yes, I know. But if I wanted to play another game that doesn't have it's own
"optimized driver" such as DTR or Sprint Car Racing, then it won't work. Any
suggestions?

I thought optimized was Papyrus' fix for wheels that don't work properlly
with Dx.  From what I recall, they preferred we all use DX but for those
that can't,  the optimized driver was made.  I never got it to work with My
LWFF, if I wanted FF I used DX not optimized.
