Problem with TSW2 (Help)

by Arturo Veg » Fri, 16 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

Hope someone can give me a hint.

I had my TSW2 working properly with GPL, N99, TOCA, MGPRS2, VIPER, etc, then
I had to do a reinstall of GPL and consequently, a recalibration of my
wheel. Then I noticed the problem:

AXIS 0 (steering wheel left - right) is detected properly and is assigned
correctly.

AXIS 1  is not detected. Press accelerator pedal, the arrow moves to the
left but not the complete
extreme. Lift pedal. Then press brake pedal, arrow moves to
the left but not to the complete
extreme. Lift pedal and arrow stays to the left, complete
extreme. Calibration marks 0.000

I noticed then that this happens also in TOCA2 demo and Nascar1999. I
haven't tried re-calibrating in the windows panel (I'm using thrustmaster's
panel) because I'm afraid that's gonna***up all my other racing games.

Any help is appreciated.

I have made a diagram with the sequence in case you find it useful:

Problem with TSW2 (Help)

by John Bod » Sat, 17 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I think it sounds like a loose wire in the pedal assembly -- one pot
(brake or gas) is working fine, but the circuit's not complete for the
other.  Do you have the split axis switch?  That may be causing this
problem if the switch is in an in-between position.  If all else
fails, contact TSW -- they're great at responding to problems.

Problem with TSW2 (Help)

by ^Frett » Sat, 17 Apr 1999 04:00:00

John;
I also have had this problem with 2 different Thrustmaster' Nascar Sprint
Wheels on the steering wheel paddle {always is the right paddle-gas with
the Sprint}and now the same on a paddle on the $14.99 CompUSA, its
always the left paddle-brake, With my calibrate {I prefer generic} it will
go to .1000 {whether it's + or -}then flicker from .1000 to the low 900s
So John or any sim contoller expert; Is this a contact glitche in my pci64
SB sound card joy-port or is my PC not receiving the signal correctly to
Gpl? It also happens in F1RS. Any & all constructive help appreciated!
TIA!! Thom j. aka ^Fretts

Problem with TSW2 (Help)

by John Bod » Sat, 17 Apr 1999 04:00:00

My guess is that your problem is also wiring in the unit itself,
rather than a problem with your sound card.  I don't have any personal
experience with the NASCAR Sprint wheels, but Thrustmaster wheels in
general are notorious for having problems with wiring that runs
through the steering shaft; the hollow shaft has no padding where the
wires exit, and the turning of the steering shaft tends to "saw" on
the wires at the exit point.  Check for cut/frayed/broken wires at
that location first.

A similar thing happened on my TSW2 after I changed the pots, and it
turned out to be a loose connection (not where I soldered in my pots,
but where the wires joined to the harness at the stock twist-type
splice).  In that instance, it looked like a good mechanical
connection, but it wasn't a good ELECTRICAL connection.  Oil, grease,
etc., on your hands can prevent wires from conducting properly, even
if they're in close physical contact -- adn I think that was part of
the problem for me.  I cleaned the wires, twisted them together, then
used the twist-on connector/splice, and things seem fine now.  (I'm
too cheap to spring for the upgrade harness with connectors, and this
problem only applies to the stock TSW2 harness, I believe.)

Problem with TSW2 (Help)

by Michael E. Carve » Sat, 17 Apr 1999 04:00:00

% John;
% I also have had this problem with 2 different Thrustmaster' Nascar Sprint
% Wheels on the steering wheel paddle {always is the right paddle-gas with
% the Sprint}and now the same on a paddle on the $14.99 CompUSA, its
% always the left paddle-brake, With my calibrate {I prefer generic} it will
% go to .1000 {whether it's + or -}then flicker from .1000 to the low 900s
% So John or any sim contoller expert; Is this a contact glitche in my pci64
% SB sound card joy-port or is my PC not receiving the signal correctly to
% Gpl? It also happens in F1RS. Any & all constructive help appreciated!
% TIA!! Thom j. aka ^Fretts

Strange that it would be the same for both units, which does sorta point
to the game port.  But, I would try cleaning the pot on the right paddle
just in case it's a slightly dirty pot.
