NASCAR 3 & TSW2 problems <--------

by Dave Lon » Sun, 19 Sep 1999 04:00:00

I have a TSW2 and I'm having some problems getting it to work with my
equipment. The wheel has been performing great until recently. The problem
started when my old sound card died. So I bought a new one, a Sound Blaster
16 PCI.

The problem is a "dead spot" in the wheels center position. I have to move
the wheel 5-10 degrees in either direction before any response. - I know the
POT is good :-) I have a plethora o' POT(s).

The solution (I thought), was buy a Game/joystick card. So, I did, and
BINGO, it worked GREAT (for NASCAR 2).

But then, I purchased NASCAR 3 and I can't seem to find a way to get it to
configure properly.

When I calibrate using the DirectX setting, there's NOT a "dead spot", but
it's a bit jumpy. Then when I try to select Steering, Braking.. etc.. it
takes several attempts to select the correct control (i.e.- wheel, pedal,
shifter). It want's to make it's own selection ? After forcing the controls
to the correct settings, the game IS playable but the car wants to jump
around too much.

When I calibrate using the Papyrus setting, It's smooth as silk and NO "dead
spot" (the way it should be) BUT when I go to the race, the sound starts
breaking up and the video "bogs down" to a frame rate of about 10.
(Absolutly unplayable)

If I remove the Game/Joystick card and plug the wheel into the sound card,
I'm back to the "dead spot".

This is my equipment:
450 PII   128M RAM
Voodoo 3  16M
Sound Blaster 16 PCI
Joystick port/card   ?brand?  Microsoft drivers
Ethernet card
Cable Modem

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,
Dave Long

Dave....

It sounds more like a software (Windows/DirX) issue than a hardware one.  What
ops sys and DX versions are you running?

I must say......with the nice equipment you have....why would you buy an SB 16
PCI card?  Why not the SB Live or the MX300.........3 dimensional sound will
have the same positive affect on your enjoyment of racing....or any other "game"
you might play on your computer......as when you got your first 3 D video card!
There's just a huge difference the "quality" of play with 3D sound.

That being said....I think your gameport and gamecard are conflicting.....  You
can't run a gamecard and have the gameport on the sound card enabled.  It must
be disabled.....not software disabled....it must be "hardware" disabled.  I
don't know about the SB 16....but some sound cards only allow the gameport to be
disabled by a jumper setting on the card (newer 3D cards excepted).  Also,
there's a known issue with the "power" rating of the gameport card (some are 3.5
volts...some are 5.0 volts) and the TSW might require one or the other...have
you checked?

I bet you  that for $100 bucks....buy the SB Live card.....all your problems
end.  And, you get 3D sound.
