Problem running Psygnosis Formula 1

A colleague of mine bought his son Psygnosis Formula 1 for Christmas to go
with
a new family PC (200+mhz Pentium with a Matrox Mystique 220 - largely
selected
the graphics card for the sake of this game) he gets the following error
message when
it loads:-

"On create D3D device"
"Unrecognised error value 80004002"

There's an OK button, but he has to press return as the mouse is inactive.
Then he gets:-

"The instruction at 0041971D referenced"
"memory at FFFFFFFF the memory  could not be"
"read from"

Anyone any ideas why he's having this problem?
He has tried loading DirectX (?) after the graphics card drivers and
the other way round more than once, but he's still getting no joy...
Please reply to me and I'll forward the responses, either from the news
group, or from e-mail.
Thanks for any hints.

Psygnosis F1 is only designed for certain 3D chipsets not Direct3D
in general. I doubt the Matrox is one of them. I thought that it only used
3dfx chipsets. Assuming I am wrong here, is Direct3D *properly*
installed?

The game also has serious flaws which caused me to return it. Namely
everytime you run the game all of your graphics, control and other options
must be re-selected. There was no SAVE feature for this stuff a couple
of months ago. People claimed that there was a patch for this, but I have
never seen it. The game does have a few cool things but as a whole
is VERY bad...
