S3 chips are not only present on Diamond cards. There
are at least 6 different manufacturers supplying s3d based
cards. Also, if you check out the s3 web site you'll find
a list of ALOT of games houses writing stuff for s3d VIRGE
and VIRGE/VX.
I'd suggest you are right in their not shutting out other users,
it's more likely that the game will have *3d* card support for
ONLY the s3d series. This seems likely since DD supports s3d
and psygnosis seem to be heading that way. All other video cards
will run using standard 13h or VESA. Psygnosis seems to have
chosen a card on the basis of how much market there will be. More
people will buy the 3dcard which costs 25% of the price and still
provides Trio64+ performance under windows. This gives a bigger
market, more games sales, more software houses seeing the benefit
and therefore more people buying the card - good business. Also,
virge is directx/direct3d compatible although some decent version2
drivers would be nice :)
This is great news for us VIRGE owners, since the DescentII patch
for Virge was far too slow to be usable even on a decent pentium.
I think this was a coding problem, judging by the playability of
Destruction Derby on VIRGE.
Hopefully, what we'll see is better coding for the s3d chip and
therefore better performance. There has been alot of critisism
of the virge chip, but I fail to understand where this has come
from considering the *very few* games available up until now. How
do you judge a card as 'sucking' on so few *early* releases? In
terms of cost vs. perfomance, my $79AUD virge based card is
great for windows, and dos, and runs GP2 with s3spdup at a vid
speed of 467.
