ICR 2 hangs in DOS, why?

by Richard Boothroy » Thu, 15 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I just got ICR 2 (DOS version) and I'm having a frustrating problem. I
can run the game out of Win95 no problems. When I hook up to someone
else via the modem my joy stick will not work (the car just steers to
the left ... if not on modem it works great). So I am trying to run ICR
2 by restarting the computer in DOS mode and running the program from
DOS but when I go to execute the program the system just hangs and I
have to reboot.

It hangs at the line with the soundcard settings at DMA. I checked for
conflicts and the device manager in Win95 has the same settings 220, 5,
3 as the set up in ICR 2. Also again, the sound and everything works
fine while running the game in Win95. I have tried a system disk and
running setup again out of DOS but no luck. Again this is the DOS
version, but it won't run out of DOS.

Any advice on what else I could try would be appreciated.

If it is a PnP Sound Card, you have to run a setup program to "activate" the
s/c.  Look in your C:\WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT file.  There may be an entry
there that you have to run.

I set up a PP.BAT file that activates the s/c, CD-ROM, and mouse for ICR2
and N2.

This may sound stupid, but are you sure you have all of the needed
drivers and settings for your soundcard in your config.sys and
autoexec.bat when you reboot to DOS?  Also, if the "3" in your soundcard
setting is the IRQ this is usually the IRQ assigned to COM2.
