OT messenger service???? Driving me nuts!!

by Milo Johnso » Thu, 20 Feb 2003 13:49:18

For the last month I have had popups on my computer from something called
messenger service.
Stuff like college degree for cash, enlarge your *** ECT.
Have tried everything I know to get rid of it but no luck.
This thing will pop up in the middle of the screen during a race and you
wreck sure as hell.
Anyone else had this thing? If so could you get rid of  it and if so how?
I went into my registry, deleted stuff from taskmanager and I am at my wits
end.
Any help appreciated.
Thank you
MILO

Log into windows as a user with admin privileges, then go to start->control
panel->administrative tools->services. Find "Messenger" in the list,
double-click it, then change the "startup type" to "disabled" in the dialog
box which pops up.

This is under NT2K. XP might be slightly different, but should hopefully be
similar.

Doug

Not going to help him, I think.  It is spammers taking advantage of a
Windows messaging service that network administrators use to send
messages to users on the network.  Doug's answer is right on.

You're right. It's also usefull to get a wider view on the Messenger issue,
because disabling it can cause other problems, like slowing down Outlook
Express's startup. You can find out how to deal with those isssues here (for
example):

I had the same problem in XP Pro.  As stated, disable the Messenger item in
Admin Tools -> Services (You may have to add Admin Tools to your Start List
to do so.  The XP Help and support will tell you how)...

or install a firewall and block them out( always a good idea, but it'll rob
some performance) .

Doug is spot on.  Pop up ad blockers wont work as it uses the windows
messenging service - this is not to be confused with ms "instant
messenger".  Both are 2 diff. things.  Disabling/deleting one will not
affect the other.

Great, I'm all for efficient programs, I hate unnecessary shit!  Talking
of which: maybe you could reduce the size of your sig, and delete all
unnecessary text from your posts?
