OT messenger service???? Driving me nuts!!

although I agree AdAware is not the answer,

FWIW, AdAware is not a pop-up blocker, but is a spyware removal utility.
More and more "freeware" is loaded with this crap, and AdAware goes through
and cleans up most spyware that gets installed.

jeff

There is supposed to be a better one called "Spybot Search and
Destroy", according to PC World, but I haven't tried it yet.  On their
test, it found 26 items compared to 9 for Ad-Aware.

thx.

i looked at it, and from their FAQ:

"These are send using the Messenger service integrated into Windows 2000 and
XP (try the 'net send' command to see for yourself).
To disable the Messenger service, go to Start --> All Programs -->
Administrative Tools --> Component Services. In Component Services, click on
Services (Local), then on the right side, find Messenger and disable it.
Note: not everyone will have Administrative Tools in the Start menu. You need
to make it visible under Taskbar and Start Menu Properties (right-click on
taskbar --> Properties). The surest way to get to Component Services is to
enter %systemroot%\system32\com\comexp.msc into the command line."

which also answers the posters original question.

jeff

says...

As of AdAware 6.0 (released earlier this month), AdAware looks to be top dog
again.  That said, I'm keeping both on my machines.

These are coming in via the Windows Messaging service.  This is the latest
abuse by the scumbag spammers of the world.  This is NOT the same as Windows
Messenger.

The Windows Messenging service handles inter-computer network
communications.  Basically, somehow they got your IP address and they are
using the NET SEND command (Syntax: NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] |
/USERS} message) to send you these messages.

I believe the most common cure is to stop the Windows Messaging service and
set it's startup to manual.

Larry

There are procedures to disable it, and unless you are on a corporate
network it should not affect you.

Sorry, you are confusing Windows Messenger with the Windows Messaging
Service.  They are two completely different entities and are not related in
any way.

That's why you set it's startup to manual and not disabled.  That way
applications that need it can start it as necessary.
