i turned off FF (MSFF wheel) and frame rates about doubled...MUCH smoother

Also, I've found that if you turn off all mirrors (and use the "look behind"
instead) the frame rates go WAY up.

Same here.

Simply turning off the FF (MS Sidewinder FF Wheel) transforms the game -
Mirrors off also helps...

Running on a PII-450 - 256Mb - GeForce DDR - I now get good frame rates at
1024x768 (with many options turned ON).

With FF activated I was struggling to run at 640x480 (with many options
OFF).

Didn't they check this out prior to release?

Even worse: they already didn't check it out before they released SCGT!
I guess they think people won't mind turning off FF because it is
implemented so bad in the game anyhow (judging from SCGT, but all the
postings make me believe that they did not resolve any of the probs with
SCGT before releasing the game as F1 2000).
