GPL handling problem, need advice

by Roger Squire » Tue, 25 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hi, I downloaded a lotus setup for monza off the alison-hine site, and I'm
not very happy with it.  Here are the problems I'm seeing:

Sharp initial turn-in and extreme sensitivity to steering wheel movement.
Pendulum motion of the car after initial turn-in, especially noticeable on
Curva Grande.

I tried setting the steering gear ratio to the lowest setting, but the wheel
is still hypersensitive.  It doesn't feel this bad on other tracks like
rueon or spa.  Any help appreciated or links to other setups :)

Try increasing overall roll bar stiffnes of the car (use GRE so you can
"lock" the front-rear values and keep the balance) and increasing the bump
setting of the dampers on the front.

See the steering tweaks below.

This is something I seem to get a lot of on my home brew setups.  I'm
not
sure exactly why the car does it.  It seems some sort of roll/pitch
coupling
is occuring.  After farting around with most of the setup options, I've
found a few things that seem to help.

Reduce bump dampers.
Increase rebound dampers.
Increase roll bar stiffness.  (Seems to mask the symptoms, not a real
cure.)
Soften the front springs.
In you're running negative front toe in, try a few clicks front toe-in
instead.

Set the car setup steering ratio _higher_ for less response.
Move the steering linearity setting toward the non-linear end.
In core.ini, set:

[ Hack ]
steer_ratio = 0                            ; Enable low speed ratio
override

Also check the differential settings. My guess is that the coast side
ramp angle is higher than what you are used to. Decrease that and the
car will be much more stable on the turn in.
