Yup, in the east... I was taping the race on TSN but the last few
minutes were golf... I watched the rest of it on RDS.

>I just got done over at the ABC Sports web site informing them of my
>opinion (distinctly negative) about their aborting coverage of the CART
>race at Road America to keep their posted broadcast schedule intact.
>This with less than 25 minutes to go in the race !!  If you also feel

Well I am sort of pissed about this. I live about 3 hours from
Road America and was at the race yesterday. I also had my
VCR recording the tape. Then I find out that this happened?!
I am pissed as I wanted to watch the race form another perspective.

I know you are all interested in how it was in person so I'll
tell ya :-)

When we got there the CART cars were doing their morning
warmup. It was awesome! You can really hear the gears
kicking when they shift. Also these cars sound much cooler
and ballsier than the Nascar cars ( I was at the brickyard 400
last August). It was almost like twice or three times louder than
the Nascar WC cars. And they did not sound like s whiny little
engine. It was like StarWars pod racing or something. MUCH
power!

Getting into the track and parked was no problem at all. We sat
on the main straight bleachers. I was on the top row where you
can stand and watch everything. Plus this is right across from
the pits. Off to the right is the start/finish line and the winners
circle. So while everyone was raving about the carrosole and
Hurry Downs I still felt like these seats were the best.

When the race started it was an amazing thunderous roar
as all of the cars passed the start finish. From where we
were on the stands you could see turn 1 so you know what
we saw :-)

When the race started again I went right next to the fence
(which seemed like 30 feet away from the main straight).
As the full field went past I could feel the turbulence swirling
over me. Pretty cool stuff.

One thing that is lacking is the on track announcing. At indy
there are mega phones on every other fence post. Not at
road america so I really did not realize what was happening
in the rear of the field. For example Little Al crapped out
early in the race and ended up in 9th! I couldn't believe it.

Anyway as everyone knows Montoya was blowing everyone
away. As he would pass we would always hear this weird
sound almost like he was downshifting. It may have been
what knocked him out of the race. I was kind of rooting
for michael if was bummed that he just couldn't do anything
with montoya. Then with 10 laps to go I turned my hat inside
out. In america the baseball players do that and call it a
"rally hat" to boost their team on. Within 2 laps montoya
broke and Newman Haas won.

The Winners circle was quite interesting. You just don't see
this stuff with the TV coverage. There are driver interviews
and champagn just like F1. Plus a real podium. Anyway
at the least I think Christen F owes me a beer, as my
rally hat won the race for him :-)

A few other things about the race. I could see the drivers get
introduced from where I was on the main straight. Boy are those
guys short! Except for Little Al, Michael and Jimmy Vasser.
Oh yeah and don't forget Paul Tracy, he looked like he
was porkin. You just don't think they are that short from the
TV coverage.

All of the teams seemed to either have kick-ass catered food or
they grilled it right there. I could have taken a great shot of all
the Target team sitting in their work area, all in a row eating
corn on the cob. The contrast of the yellow corn with their
orange Target suits would have made the picture :-)

Did I mention the Winner Circle sucks??? Well it does.
It is this little fenced in area that only the press really had
access to. I had a somewhat good view from the bleachers
I was sitting at, but I think they could have done much better.

Paul Neuman was kind of an embarrassment if you ask me.
The winners circle interviewer asked him something like,
"Well Paul what does it feel like to have your team finish 1/2?".
Paul Neuman replied with something like, "Duh... Um...
Well we were out there one and two, and we just had to
finish". Well WTF is with that? I was shocked and had
no idea what his problem was. He seemed either stricken
with stage fright or drunk, or both :-)

I take it you've never been to an F1 race then, eh Greg?  Save up you
money and go to Montreal just once.  Worth it for the sound alone.  For my
money though, the most impressive engines on the face of the Earth are
ones found in Top Fuel and Funny Cars.

Haven't been a a CART race yet, but eg. at Le Mans where CART-like 3.6
litre turbo engines (Toyota, Audi) and NASCAR-like 6 litre normally
aspirated V8 (Panoz, Mercedes) where used.
The Toyota were unimpressive (but effective), while the Audis at least
"banged" at every gear shift. The turbines in the intakes and exhausts
deafen the turbo engine more or less. Pretty lame compared to the
strong voice of the Silver Arrow or the even stronger aggressive
thunder of the Panoz.

The good thing with F1 sound is that you don't need a ticket to hear
it. ;-)

True. ;-)
Just watching the face of somebody who attends a TF start for the
first time is great: After the burnout, they say "Wow, this is loud!",
but they've ain't seen nothing yet ...

On the other hand, the thunder & lightning strike of a dragster is
gone quickly, while those F1 hornets cars keep buzzing on and on for
90 minutes or so.

Thanks, Greg, for your race descriptions.  I haven't been to a live
open-wheel road course race in many years, and really miss the sights
and sounds.  TV just does not deliver, and going to nearby Bristol
Motor Speedway is just not as fulfilling (still fun, though).  Back in
the late 60's we used to go to Mid-Ohio, Mosport, Road America, etc.,
and still remember well the ...sensation... of having a whole field of
unlimited Can-Am monsters going past 20 feet away (not to mention
having a field of 25-30 Cooper Mini's , F-Vee's, or Sprites bouncing
and bumping past in the prelim's).

I am on the list for tickets to the US GP at Indy in Sept 2000. But
if I can't get them I'll probably check out montreal. I was wondering
how the F1 cars would sound :-)

You could hear the CART engines just fine from about a mile
away from the track. I was sitting at a stop sign I could hear the
morning warmup.

Great sound.

Here is one of my favorites.  4 minutes of Ferrari V12 music...

Terry, I'm with you.  Haven't been to a live race lately, but used to go to
Watkins Glen in the 70's.  There's simply nothing like the sound of a F1 12 cyl
Ferrari screaming through the gears.  Like the earlier post, we could hear the
cars as we drove up to the track, only then it was Andretti (Mario), Stewart,
ect.

CART is not comparable to F1.  To believe it, you have to hear an F1 car (or
20 of them in a row on the first lap :)).  The sound of the F1 cars through
the hairpin at Montreal is unbelievable -- earplugs a must.

Went to last years Mtl F1 race.  Couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear when
first hearing the shriek of the engines at full bore.  What a sound!

BTW, of the F1 sims, I'd say OF1RS is the closest in capturing the sound.

Maybe I need to get a sport bike again (or an S2000??).

Gotta agree here.  When I was on my way to Montreal for my first F1 race,
I mentioned to a guy I was speaking with in the airport that I was really
looking forward to hearing F1 cars in person.  He then asked if I had ever
been to an F1 race.  When I responded "No, but I've been to a couple of
CART races." he made what I thought was a really arrogant statement.  "F1
cars make CART sound like sewing machines."   Turns out, he was absolutely
correct!
