ok so we can't really class the races, and when thrown in an online
race with a bunch of strangers your biggest hope is to survise lap 1.

BUT for those who have been fortunate to find themselves in a regular
group of familar drivers....how 'bout sim to the "Belt" system used in
some of the martial arts?

wear a white helmet if your a rookie
a yellow for  when you are not a rookie
blue when you are no longer lapped by the field
green  when you no longer find your self being lapped by the leader
red when you can finish in the top 5
purple when you have won a race with at least 10 opponents
black when you have won a race with at least 20

the order of color is off the cuff, the classes can be structured here
for all to think - agree on (if you can give up your favorite color
and the refusal of NOT wearing a 'xxx' one)

but wouldn't it be similar to seeing 'rookie stripes' on the back of
an indy car? to see a white helmet ahead (no pun intended) and KNOW
this driver is raw and proceed with caution...ok never mind it won't
be accepted, never mind.

Actually, this was a quite constructive idea, only prob is to get
anybody to follow it I guess :)
Reserve one specific color for rookies!

In Nascar, the rookie drivers have a yellow stripe on their bumper.  I
don't see how you're going to pull this one off.  I for one do not plan
on changing my helmet color.  Some days you're on, some days you're off,
and your driving ability changes from minute to minute.  Helmet color
won't mean a thing.

well, I'd have to agree! :-)

I have never thought of it :o)

Really a good idea. How about adapting it ?

Yes, a nice thought, but adaptation is impossible, IMHO.

The rating system would have to be a little different but the basic idea is
the same.  I mean, what if you win against 10 WORLD class guys, that means
you only go up to purple, but if you win against 20 rookies, you are a pro.
A black should be awarded maybe if you win against 5 other purples or
something similar to that, or have 5 wins against 10 other purple or blacks.
Something like that.  Cause really, if you lose against 20 guys, its not
like all of a sudden you can win a race against 10, but the idea is good.

the problem with having to win to get the pro status is that.. I'll host a
race and after everyone does one lap I'll disconnect everyone making me the
winner by default. AND a pro!

so,  The question should be "what makes fore a pro to be called a pro?"

YES!

Of course, since you cannot enforce such a convention, you will have to rely
on other drivers following it on their own.

If VROC would be so kind as to include a little banner on each room, a lot
more people will see it and follow it. I know there will always be trolls,
but at least the 'regulars' will be dependable.

I'm changing my helmet to BLUE today.

well after reading 'mostly' constructive replies,,,and i'm overwhelmed
at the positive attitude, my only 'on second thought' is in a club
setting if you can now recognise different drivers of same ability BY
THEIR HELMET COLOR, this plan would :(  make them unrecogniseable.
their  ability or their personality?

maybe not so many color rankings? just white for rookies?

Dave, are you color blind?  Don't you realize how badly orange clashes
with that green Brabham of yours?  That's almost as bad as a green helmet
with a red Ferrari. The Fashion Police are going to black flag you for
sure.   ;-)

I've been wearing the black helmet lately, since it goes well with all the
cars (particularly the red Ferrari) and I change rides often.

Yours in fashion,

Dave Ewing

P.S.  Also, don't wear the white helmet before Easter or after Labor Day.
