Experience with both Hyperstimulator and TSW?

by Dave Ma » Sat, 22 Aug 1998 04:00:00

(I've also posted this on "The APEX" GPL website forum after reading
several posts about the Hyperstimulator there, but thought there might
be a better chance for response here on r.a.s...apologies if you've
seen this in both places.)

Has anyone tried *both* a Hyperstimulator and a TSW? I'd be curious to
know how they compare from the point of
view of the feel of the wheel and pedals, especially since the earlier
posts had very positive comments about the feel
of the Hyperstimulator pedals.

I'm guessing that few, if anyone, have used both, though. Don't know
if anyone in Australia has a TSW, and vice
versa for the States and Hyperstimulator.

Not really a fair comparison, since the HS is a sit-down unit, and
the TSW is desktop mounted.  The Virtual Vehicle by Interactive I/O
would make a better pairing to the Hyperstimulator, although I doubt
you could get one down-under.  Manufactured from steel components
with a leather-wrapped wheel, it's a solid yet pricey system (about
$1200 US).  For more info: http://www.interactiveio.com

Cheers!

I see...Makes sense.  Although subtle, you pointed this out in your
last post, but I missed it until I read it again.

Cheers!

Yes, but what I was really looking for was a comparison about the feel
and responsiveness of the TSW's wheel and pedals versus those within
the Hyperstimulator.  For example, the use of the bicycle chains and
springs attached to the steering shaft of the TSW wheel feels much
more realistic to me than the feel of the T2 I used to use.  And, the
TSW's pedals also feel much more realistic than those of the T2.

I guess I'm just wondering...hypothetically, if you took out the wheel
and pedals that are in the Hyperstimulator and replaced them with
those from the TSW, would you have a "better Hyperstimulator"?  It's
really more of a question about the quality of the controls that your
hands and feet are using...a "how close do the controls come to
feeling like you're actually using a real steering wheel and pedals"
kind of question.

I have my computer table, chair, monitor and TSW wheel/pedals as
closely matched as possible to the relative positioning of the seat,
wheel and pedals in my Supra, which I've always found to be an
extremely comfortable driving position.  It's not the same position as
what you appear to be in with the Hyperstim, but I'm very close to how
I'm positioned in my car (primarily so that I can do 100% distance
races with as little physical discomfort as possible).

Sorry for rambling.  Again, you hear/read a lot about how great the
TSW feels (and I agree), that I was just curious about what you're
really getting for those extra $ with the Hyperstim.

Thanks,

The Virtual Vehicle comes painted, assembled and ready to rock 'n'
roll.  Used daily, I've owned mine for close to 2-1/2 years.  Aside
from replacing one button and lubing the steering column, has been
a rock solid and first rate system.

II/O also produces a desktop unit for around $600...What's cool is
its modular design, so should the user deside later that he/she
prefers the sit-down version, all that's needed is to order the
chassis w/ seat and plug it all together.  Their also working on a
Force-Feedback system, but haven't announce a release date.

Cheers!
