UPDATE:Was,Larry or any PC Gurus :)

I have had my parents PC for the day and all seems to be ok after
implementing all the advice given over the power management issues and XP's
differences with 98SE.

The only thing left that isn't how i want it for them is the switching off
action.

They are used to choosing Shut Down in Win 98SE and it switches off.

The machine is now getting to a screen saying you can safely shut down, but
then when i expect a simple press of the on/off button it actually wont
switch off unless i press it in for about 3 seconds.

In BIOS the option you feel would cure this...Switch Off Action-Instant/4
secs delay seems to have no effect.

Which ever i choose here the machine still takes 3 secs to switch off.

Am i to be happy with how it is now or is there an easy answer ?

Many thanks to all helpers in this thread, very gratefully appreciated.:)

UPDATE 2..!!

The PC works perfectly.....you can switch off and start up again at will,as
many times as you wish....i did on purpose to 'stress' it...

BUT

Once you turn it off,and leave it a while,in my case 50 minutes....the
problem appears.

It fires up,but dies again within 15 seconds.......and will NOT fire up at
all now.

So despite all the changes in Bios and Windows XP Power Management settings
it is still the same.

Firstly......one option which i saw in Win XP was ACP(??) which it said it
had detected and did i want it to control my power settings(saving power i
think..),i didnt tick it.

Wrong move..?

Now i am totally at a loss and wonder what we do next.

Any ideas..?

FINAL UPDATE

When you finally get it to fire up,it goes through a routine similar to
Scandisk in Win98SE but it says there is a problem with the drive
consistency..????

It is FAT32 and when it does the check it comes up with either 8kb of file
corrected or nothing is wrong.

Is Win XP only to be used on a NTFS base....?

Sounds like memory going bad, maybe the hard drive is going or perhaps
you've got a problem of overheating.  If you leave it alone for a couple
hours, it'll boot?  If so, it is heat.  I'd check to make sure your fans are
running okay.  Windows XP runs either FAT32 or NTFS.  With the latter, you
have more security options.
