Is there a sane and logical reason why a pc would change overnight..?

PC is working like a dream,my brother is having probs so i lend him mine and
cure his(driver problems).

He rings up complaining that i have leant him a bag of nails....well as we
all know/think,our own pc's are great and obviously it must be 'user
error'..:)

So i get his back to him ahead of time and bring mine back.

To cut 5 days into a few sentences it is running terribly, with the
appearance of a pc trying to cope with too little RAM.

Stuttering totally dominates it....you move the mouse and it is in slow
motion finally getting to where you want ,the click is in slow motion and
the action is VERY slow to start.

I d/l Rambooster so i could see what was going on....and it is like a leak
is occuring.

Start PC with 512 DDR 2100.
At desktop.....396mb
Start Kazaa/Win MX/Bearshare.....376mb

Then i watch it drop every second until it reaches 0mb within a minute.

Before last weekend i had my d/l programs on,ICQ and music app on in the
background and played Virtual Pool 3....never a stutter, never a delay.

So i need help in understanding what is happening,or at least what are the
possible causes of such a dramatice change in a pc's running.

Many thanks for any ideas as ever.

Anything can happen. One day I turned mine off for a couple hours and when I
turned it back on I couldn't get online (cable modem). Nothing changed,
nothing was moved. After playing with it for 2 days, swapping NICs and
reinstalling win98, no luck. I decided to change to win2k, but the problem
followed it. On a lark, I switched the cat5 cable. That was it all along.
So, your memory could have just decided to quit or something else is dying.
Most commonly though, when the type of thing you're describing happens, it's
a virus.

Glad you said that GTX....first thing i did was update my virus software and
do a viruscheck.

Came up clean.

Just been looking through System Config's Report....

Problem Devices :-

ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering  Error 22

This is listed 4 times with different PNP device ID after each.

Dont know what it is,what it does or how to make it 'not' a problem device
but might it be my problem..?

TIA

Desktops sometimes don't like being lugged about in the boot of the car,
this happened to me.

Did you open it up to check that everything is firmly plugged into the
motherboard? (especially the RAM).

It's one way of handling IRQ Steering. BIOS and Windows are the other ways,
I believe. Here's what you can try if you're brave. Boot in safe mode.
Delete all instances of that ACPI (in safe mode more than 4 may show up).
Reboot normally. Windows should find it again. You may need your windows cd.
I haven't needed to try this in W2k, it's worked for me in W98, but I've
never tried it in WinME.

Yes definatly. I used to go to lan touneys all the time and 25% of the time
had to remove the case and push my video card back in. (check everything and
push everything in hard)

I think you have a background task that's messing up the works.

Bring up the Task Manager and look at what's using the processor, and see if
there is something sucking up a lot of CPU time.

Did your brother install ANYTHING, even as small as a mouse driver?

If so, get rid of it and see if it improves.

That's not good...

The ACPI IRQ Holder is, partially, responsible for the assignment and
management of IRQ resources in your system.

If ACPI is down, there's no telling what your system might do.

Again, I'd check and see if he installed ANYTHING while it was in his
posession.
