               November 12, 1995

RARS is the Robot Auto Racing Simulation, a competition for programmers
and an on-going challenge for practicioners of Artificial Intelligence
and real-time adaptive optimal control.  It consists of a simulation of
the physics of cars racing on a track, a graphic display of the race,
and a separate control program (robot "driver") for each car.  All RARS
software and activities are free and open to the public.  It runs on
DOS, Windows, OS/2, UNIX, Linux, and several other platforms.  For more

Race Report

Seeing as we only had 5 novices and one expert, I decided again to not
run an expert race, but instead to run the novice race with the one
expert racer as company.  The races finished as might be expected when
looking at the solo lap times.  The surprise happening here is that
Lisa, while having the fastest time all around crashed in both races.
Both times while passing on the inside during a curve. Tough luck!  We
also had one competitor whos car only just made it to me before the
deadline.  (Stalker)

            Upcoming RARS Race Meets

November 26:    (Unlimited Division Races)
No. of races        2 novice and 2 expert each division
     Tracks:             Chosen at random/unknown
     Laps:               80 each race
Software version:   0.64 (or latest variant of 0.63)
     Surface Type:       1
practice as requested, random starting order.

Hint:
I suggest all contestants for this race get all the tracks from the
ftp site and try out their cars on them.  If they can run on all of
them, then you are doing good.  I would especially test the cars
on Fiorano, because at least one of the surprise tracks has a tricky
segment much like Fiorano's.  Another tricky track is fourmile.  The
last left-right-left segment is begging for optimization.

December 10th, (Unlimited Division Races)
No. of races        2 novice and 2 expert each division
     Tracks:             Mosport and Suzuka
     Laps:               80 each race
Software version:   0.64  (or latest variant of 0.63)
     Surface Type:       1
practice as requested, random starting order.

TENTATIVE RACING SCHEDULE (all races track surface 1)
December 24th, Fiorano and Adelaide Stocker Division Races, 40 laps
January  7th, Fiorano and Adelaide Unlimited Division Races, 80 laps

Comments from Ralph

Another poor turn out.  I was disappointed.  But I still intend to run
the races as long as people submit cars.  I may start running both races
together like I did today.  If either race has less than 8 competitors I
will start mixing them together.  Its the passing and interreacting with
other cars that makes Rars racing more than just an optimization
problem, IMHO. I'd still like to hear comments from those people that
didn't submit cars. Did your dog eat your code?  Did you have engine
trouble?  Do I have B.O.? :-)  Also, I intend to be on irc (channel rars)
at 4:00 pm EST for all future races.
