RARS is the Robot Auto Racing Simulation, a competition for
programmers and an on-going challenge for practicioners of Artificial
Intelligence and real-time adaptive optimal control.  It consists of
a simulation of the physics of cars racing on a track, a graphic
display of the race, and a separate control program (robot "driver")
for each car.  All RARS software and activities are free and open to
the public.  It runs on DOS, Windows, OS/2, UNIX, Linux, and several
other platforms.  For more information e-mail to m...@cac.psu.edu.

Race Reports

As I said I would, I ran the experts with the novices as traffic
and vice versa.

The first race was run on watkins glen.  This is a very long and
thin looking track on my computer.  The cars were able to navigate
it without problem.  StuckCar2 proved to be very hard to pass and
passing it dealt much damage to ramdu and jas.  Ramdu was the leader
most of the race with jas trying to make up time.  Near the end,
ramdu tried to pass on the inside and got squeezed off the track.
Ramdu had about 23000 damage at the time.  This was enough to
force ramdu out of the race.  Heath4 ran off the track while
refueling.  By lap 70, Jas seemed to be in a low-aggressive
behavior pattern (as was my car).  So they all meekly followed StukCar
for 10 laps neither one accumulating damage.

6 cars for 80 laps.  The track was watglen.trk.  The drivers were:
Jas, StukCar2, Sneezy, Ramdu, Heath4, and Ralph01.

The initial RVG seed was 71558.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
Ralph01, Jas, Ramdu, StukCar2, Heath4, and Sneezy.

 1      Jas  avg spd 86.51    80 laps  20460 damage   88 fuel   10 pts accum
 2  Ralph01  avg spd 86.5     80 laps  26209 damage   53 fuel    6 pts accum
 3 StukCar2  avg spd 85.43    79 laps  11547 damage   92 fuel    4 pts accum
 4   Sneezy  avg spd 84.95    78 laps   3761 damage   66 fuel    3 pts accum
 5    Ramdu  avg spd 87.95    60 laps  30067 damage  144 fuel    2 pts accum
 6   Heath4  avg spd 85.37    52 laps  30253 damage    0 fuel    1 pts accum

The second track was Magny Cours.  Created by Ferdinand Trauttmansdorff.
The track was very treacherous.  Jas accumulated 28000 damage on
the first lap.  Both Heath and Sneezy took small hits each time
around.  By the 10th lap, Heath4 and Sneezy were out, Jas was
running conservatively (or so I believe) and StuckCar2 was limping
along.  Ralph crashed both Jas and StuckCar2 into the dirt so
it was just a matter of Ramdu and Ralph (neither really competing)
to finish the race.

6 cars for 80 laps.  The track was magnycrs.trk.  The drivers were:
Jas, StukCar2, Sneezy, Ramdu, Heath4, and Ralph01.

The initial RVG seed was 40961.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
Ralph01, Ramdu, Sneezy, Heath4, Jas, and StukCar2.

 1  Ralph01  avg spd 78.44    82 laps  10319 damage  136 fuel   10 pts accum
 2    Ramdu  avg spd 76.25    80 laps  11895 damage  106 fuel    6 pts accum
 3      Jas  avg spd 75.06    56 laps  30393 damage   88 fuel    4 pts accum
 4 StukCar2  avg spd 74.42    27 laps  30353 damage   43 fuel    3 pts accum
 5   Sneezy  avg spd 71.74    10 laps  30005 damage  104 fuel    2 pts accum
 6   Heath4  avg spd 71.1      4 laps  30444 damage  127 fuel    1 pts accum

Jas was the undisputed winner of the novice division and with this
win gets his second novice win which propels him into the expert
division.

I ran the Magny Cours track again with all cars but this time it
was a matter of Jas versus Ramdu.  As can be seen, Jas quickly
crashed out of the race and the rest was history.

6 cars for 80 laps.  The track was magnycrs.trk.  The drivers were:
Jas, StukCar2, Sneezy, Ramdu, Heath4, and Ralph01.

The initial RVG seed was 36692.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
StukCar2, Jas, Heath4, Ralph01, Ramdu, and Sneezy.

 1  Ralph01  avg spd 78.34    84 laps  10807 damage  127 fuel   10 pts accum
 2 StukCar2  avg spd 74.31    80 laps  16127 damage  140 fuel    6 pts accum
 3    Ramdu  avg spd 76.53    34 laps  30048 damage    0 fuel    4 pts accum
 4   Sneezy  avg spd 71.58    14 laps  30003 damage   86 fuel    3 pts accum
 5   Heath4  avg spd 71.41     4 laps  30232 damage  127 fuel    2 pts accum
 6      Jas  avg spd 73.29     1 laps  30328 damage  141 fuel    1 pts accum

Watkins Glen looked to be a good test as both Ramdu and Jas did
well in the novice division and it was only bad luck that made
Ramdu crash out.  This time Ramdu had a bad starting postition
and had to pass (or die trying) everyone else.  The esses proved
to be too much for Ramdu (who was trying to pass at the time)
and very soon he crashed out.

6 cars for 80 laps.  The track was watglen.trk.  The drivers were:
Jas, StukCar2, Sneezy, Ramdu, Heath4, and Ralph01.

The initial RVG seed was 32303.

   results of race 1:
starting positions:
Ralph01, Sneezy, StukCar2, Heath4, Jas, and Ramdu.

 1      Jas  avg spd 88.04    80 laps  16460 damage   80 fuel   10 pts accum
 2  Ralph01  avg spd 87.47    80 laps  21649 damage   67 fuel    6 pts accum
 3   Heath4  avg spd 85.18    77 laps   7453 damage    4 fuel    4 pts accum
 4   Sneezy  avg spd 84.93    77 laps  17048 damage   70 fuel    3 pts accum
 5 StukCar2  avg spd 85.48    66 laps  30040 damage  149 fuel    2 pts accum
 6    Ramdu  avg spd 84.41     2 laps  30303 damage  137 fuel    1 pts accum

Comments from Ralph

This was very exciting today as I didn't run the preliminaries until
after the races.  I hadn't seen the Magny Cours track until today
and from the first glance it looked like a doozy.  We had the first
competition for expert races today and I think we might have had
better competition but someones mail didn't come through quite
right.

I have decided to waive the requirement to resubmit the entries every
week in the hopes of building up the number of drivers. The contestants
starting this week won't need to resubmit their cars. If, on the other
hand, they don't wish to resubmit their driver, then they should let me
know.

Good luck and see you in two weeks.
