I'm still running 98se, and I'd suggest that.  However, other people HAVE had
success with win2k.  I wouldn't suggest ME or XP at all - strictly a personal
bias here...<g>

Windows 98. Last time I checked, Win2000 doesn't support my Microsoft
(!!!) FF steering wheel. Not sure about XP.

I made the big mistake of upgrading from 98Se to Me.
I agree with most that it is one of the flakiest OS's Bill has ever made.
I stayed with ME ( gritting my teeth ) waiting for the release of XP.
I though that if XP was a dud, I would just go back to 98Se.
Well it has been a few months now, and I am still with XP.
It is definately a lot more stable than 98Se, and 350 times more Stable than
ME.
Although XP rarely locks up ( requiring a Reboot ), I have managed to do it
with F12002.
This was partially my fault, I chose the wrong Connection type in
Multiplayer.
XP is VERY resource hungry. I would suggest using 98Se to anyone with other
than a Grunter of a System with Minimum 256K Ram.
My Gut feeling is that you would get a few more frames out of 98Se.
I am sticking with XP mainly for the feel of the OS, and the fact that all
the latest Hardware & Games are well supported within XP.
My recommendations:
For a not so potent P.C. ....Go with 98 Se
If you have got the latest and greatest P.C. ...Go with XP
I do feel that the best *** compromise as far as XP goes, would be to
have a dual boot or dual hard drive setup. The *** boot up should have a
bare bones OS, with just the bare minimum loaded in the background, to
maximise *** resources.
And in my case it would only have GPL, F12002, ICR3 ( I wish), Kingpin, and
the soon to be released ( yeah right ) Duke Nukem Forever loaded up.
I would also load up GP4 if I had a Pentium 6 - 8.4 GHZ with about 3 Gig of
ram. :-)
Editors note: Microprose design them like that to give the product a longer
shelf life :-)

XP will as long as it's not the gameport version.

I like WinXP a lot and use it on several of my systems, but my dedicated
*** box is running Win98Lite, the scratched version without IE and
stuff

I've done a bit of benchmarking and testing and haven't found a
noticeable difference in performance between the various OS's, XP is
incredibly stable though, and aside from the things that MS is trying to
force upon us, I happen to think it's a ***y good OS

It may not be "supported", but it does work. Only glitch I see with it is
you can't keep it from showing up twice in the hardware manager. But it
works fine. I went from 98se to 2000, and not having a crash every other day
(sometimes more) is nice.

Ditto here as well Chris, I have found XP Home to be a very stable os, which
runs my games very well. And I typically leave my machine on 24/7.
Course, that cost me a network card and router couple weeks ago during a
severe thunderstorm, so now when it rains hard I shut em off :).

Your system crashed every other day in 98se?!?  I guess I've gotten lucky - I
haven't had NEARLY that much problem with mine...<shrug>

It is gameport. I think Win98 should therefore be the default
recommendation for all but the most sophisticated users. Win98 will
work with all games, all devices. None of the other systems will. Easy
choice.

Yes but i was doing a lot of stuff on it. Started using a program called
memturbo, and got it to where it would only crash about every three days.

Windows ME is the worst operating system ever released by Microsoft.  It was
barely beta quality, and generated more Blue-Screens than you'd think
possible.

Horrible, horrible stuff.
