A few questions about GPL...

by Andre G » Sat, 14 Jun 2003 08:10:27

I am not good enough to join online races yet but I hope to be able to do so
soon.  Is there a "standard" view (in-car or chase views) used when racing
online?  Right now, I like to see my whole car on the track but would it be
preferable to get used to racing with the in-car view?

Also, right now, I can`t even compete with the AI cars.  Is there a way to
lower how fast these other cars go?  I would like to make them only slightly
better than me so that I would have at least a living chance to win a race
once in a while!

I have just re-installed GPL a few days ago (after more than 1 year maybe 2
on the shelf) and I am really rediscovering it thank to this group.  I am
also amazed by the number of add-on tracks and other stuff that you guys
came up with.  Awesome!  Now if I could only get somewhat competitive so
that I can race online...

> I am not good enough to join online races yet

Hey, that never stopped anyone! :o) Even if you're slow, just drive
carefully and keep an eye on your mirrors. If you drive predictably and
don't make the mistakes I made (trying to be helpful, dodging out of the
way and scaring people to death in the process!) you'll be fine.

It's generally accepted that Real Men (and Women, obviously) only use the
in car view. It's a simulation, after all, and there's no type of racing
where the driver sits ten feet off the ground, ten yards back from the
front of his vehicle. Well, apart from the little known
reverse-truck-racing series.

But in ***space, no-one can hear you hit the F10 key ;o) Having said
that, the biggest problem with the exterior view is the lack of mirrors,
and mirrors are vital when racing with others.

If you want to improve your racing it might be best to stick to the
original tracks for now. (It's been a while since I visited vroc, but I
expect Monza's still popular). But you're right, the various graphical and
track enhancements make GPL an amazing and continuing racing experience.
Hats off to everyone still actively involved in the community.

I'm in the same boat as Andrew. I have had this game setting on the shelf
for a year or two and would like to give it another go. Where is a good
place for someone just starting out NOW to go for info and help. Are there
any Racing Clubs that help new drivers?

There are a few ways to slow down the AI cars. I use the GEM+ utility.

That should be enough to get you started. If you ever need any links go to
Hotgrid's links page at http://hotgrids.racesimcentral.com/

Of course you can always post questions on our GPL forum at
