GPL: a few bugs

by Norman McBrid » Mon, 05 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I am getting a lot of scrambling of the screen at various points through the
game.  It has happend at Kyalami, Nurburgring and Spa in training and a race
or two.

Here is the setup:

ABIT IT5H w/ AMD k6 200 mhz
64 megs RAM
Diamond Viper V330
Diamond Monster 3D
Windows 98
Nvidia reference drivers for Viper
3DFX reference drivers for Monster 3D.

Any ideas?

Sometimes when I crash, and the car is upside down, the upper half of the
screen gets scrambled.

Twice now the game has done a odd thing.  The sound will vanish, and
pressing ANY key has no effect.  Strangely, I can continue to drive just
fine, but keyboard control of any kind is gone.  I have to do a
CNTL_ALT_DEL.

Try turning off your screensaver.

Haven't seen that.  Only bug I've seen, if you hit an object hard enough to
get stuck, sometimes if you nail the throttle trying to get unstuck, the
FRONT left wheel starts spinning like mad, and you get a pretty awesome
display of smoke from the tire.  I don't remember these '67 beasties having
4 wheel drive :-)

That, and after a bit of online last nite, I noticed at Monza my record was
like **59.71** - which I most definitely didn't drive, although it would be
nice for Clark to say "Man, where can I make up that 30 seconds?" instead of
me <g>  With this sim, I want to earn everything I get, so I erased that
result.  I guess it got some corrupted result from my online play ?

Yeah.. that happened to me one time.. lap record at Zandvoort showed up as
20.91 seconds!!! Wow, that's fast!

It's due to clock smashing/warping, I believe. The car's position gets lost,
and sometimes gets put back at the wrong place (or wrong data is sent so it
thinks the car was at the start line..)

A quick fix to getting rid of that "best lap" is to go into the track
directory (Monza, in this case), and edit the "record.ini" file. Reset
"time" to 0.0  . The next time you go out on the track, you'll create a
fresh new lap record.

[snip]

ICR2 does the same in 2-party play, usually on the "client" side... An
inherited problem?
