GPL: a few questions....

by Simon Goodwi » Sat, 24 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I've finally got this game on order and I'm hoping to be on-line in a
couple of weeks (your friendly back-marker).  First off, can anyone
recommend a few good servers in South-Western Ontario
(Toronto-Detroit).  Also, I would like to join a nearby league ASAP as I
find it much more fun to learn tracks for upcoming events.. any ideas?
[I'm a very safe and considerate driver]  I understand servers aren't
'public' and that only a sys-ops can initiate a race - this sounds
terrible.  I suggest that someone get a page up listing servers and
passwords so that ppl can use them for racing whenever they want!

Having just got a VooDoo2 for my P450 I've been putting Alison's Brabham
set-up for Watkins through the paces (demo 1.0).  It's sure a lot better
than the default which I couldn't seem to keep on the road. I haven't
been able to break 1:11 yet though (well, only after about 40 laps)...
could you tell me what speeds ppl manage during on-line races (average
races that is).  So let me get this straight: I need set-ups for each
track, each different make of car and each level (i.e. Grand Prix, F2
etc.). That could be hundreds of set-ups!!  Is there an IROC equivalent
for on-line racing, that is, can a race be nominated where everyone is
forced to use the same set-up?  Also, is there any kind of rating sytem
(like Nascar on TEN) so that ppl can get a higher grade for fewer
accidents, more passing etc.?  On their system, players can nominate
races and set a minimum rating to participate (keeps away the
riff-raff).

Anyway, all for now. Thanks for listening and thanks in advance for all
the helpful tips I'll soon be getting <heh>.

GPL: a few questions....

Simon
GPL is like nothing you have experienced before and this includes the way we
race online. There is only one way of finding races in reality and that is
by connecting to VROC via the web site or by using the GSB (native windows)
interface. Races are run on an almost global basis and regional
considerations are not an issue here.

 >I understand servers aren't

In the main, servers consist of individuals who host races and leagues in
their own time and at their own expense. When races are passworded there is
usually a good reason - IE league races or buddies racing each other. You
would become extremely unpopular within the GPL world if you were to start
broadcasting these passwords. There are many pickup races on VROC that are
easily accesable to non league racers so there is no need to worry about
private servers

Hahaha. Try another 400 and you might be getting ball park figures. Practice
practice and...oh yeah practice. Many of us here have been at this for a
year now. 40 laps hardly gets your motor run in!

To be competetive at Watkins Glen you need to be running around the 1:07
mark. There are exeptional people who can do 1:03. These are few and far
between though. At your stage, look to be consistent rather than to find raw
speed on every lap.

Correct. There are hundreds available for download on the GPL sites however.

that is, can a race be nominated where everyone is

There are many races on VROC run to different rules, configurations etc.

Not formally although many leagues have minimum ability requirements. One
league I race in..The GMSS requires you to complete excercises and run a
number of qualifying races before issuing a pro licence.

On their system, players can nominate

Yes. This is why passwords should not be given out to the "riff raff" <G>
