thats alright Bruce, us tasmanians are used to it:o)

I found down near the hairpin was the best place to see the action.  You can
see right in the cars and see the guys working trying to out brake each
other, and then fighting the car as they try to get the power down coming
out of the corner.

One of my favourite circuits - from a spectator's viewpoint - was Catalina
Park, at Katoomba.
Tight, twisty and in a natural bowl, so that at least 75% of the circuit
could be seen from anywhere.
Very popular back in the 60's and even hosted a couple of national titles.
That was in the days when al that separated the spectator from the driver
was a 1" thick timber fence and a couple of feet of grassed verge!

Also Amaroo Park - another Sydney circuit - at which the majority could be
seen from any vantage point.
Amoroo closed a couple of years back, I believe - for a housing development!
:(
I once ran an MG Midget at Amaroo.....but that's another story.

Aaah! Memories! :)

Bruce.

Hi Tim....

Well, if you were inside the tent you wouldn't see anything.....but then why
would you be there if you wanted to see the racing?  LOL....

Actually, this hospitality area directly below where I took the pictures has
about a 10,000 seat grand stand between it and the track.  You just can't
see this area of the Sears terrace seating from the angle I took the
picture.  Just above and behind me, is the motorhome parking area for that
hospitality center.  Rented RV motorhomes are placed in this area so
corporate VIP's and their guests can actually stay right at the track if
they so desire.

Also, this hospitality area is only one of 8 corporate hospitality centers,
scattered about the track.  If you look at the photo, every place that you
see grouping of white tents is one of those hospitality areas (not all of
them have associated RV motorhome parking, however).  Each has its own
trackside seating.....as well as the gathering area for food and beverage
functions.

Nice pictures... if only you'd had more overlap they could've been stitched
into a seamless image :(

We had hospitality tickets for Kansas the last 2 years(NAPA tent).  It's in
turn 1 so you can see pretty well but we just get a belly full and head to
our seats in the stands.

I'd love to see Sears Point someday but it would be a hell of trip from
Iowa!

Sears Point never looked to me like a real racetrack.  It's 1001 changes in
the last decade, the fact that it has multiple courses, the imho ugliness of
the yellow grass patch, it just doesn't make it a real, clean racetrack like
every F1 track on the schedule.

It kinda looks cheap.

What an odd statement! :)

Define "real racetrack" - and if you include any of the made-for-TV Micky
Mouse courses which Uncle Bernie's World-Wide Circus includes then your
definition is next to worthless.

Bruce (sitting here with bated breath).

Figurative statement Bruce, cmon don't be silly as you aren't an idiot.  It
looks dirty, it's not clean, the asphalt is patched everywhere with sand and
grass over it, with the track blending into

So long as they continue to race in Monaco, I don't think passing is really
much of an issue to the F1 crowd. :-) LOL!

I would like to see F1 on Sears err I mean Infineon, just to see how fast
they could lap the place.

To me, I'd say North Carolina Motor Speedway.  The Rock.  Deceptively
challengine, multiple grooves, *no blocking*, forgiving of a single
mistake - yet penalizes repeated mistakes (tire wear).  That (to me)
is what racing is about.

For race *courses* (read: road racing) I'd have to go with Road
Atlanta.  High speed corners, low speed corners, elevation changes,
and nothing resembling a chicane.

Francois, I've seen some fabulous racing in my time on circuits which match
the very description you've just given.
Appearance of the stage means stuff-all; it's the performance that's the
crux.

Jeez - if you base the qualities of a race-track on what it looks like
rather than what takes place on its surface then you've really got the wrong
end of the stick, mate!

Bruce.

Hear, hear!
I thoroughly concur, Mike.

Images of the 1970's - 1980's versions of Nurburgring, Elkhart Lake, Spa and
Mount Panorama come wafting into view. :)

Bruce.

What I meant more is that, for today's FIA standards, I don't see a track
like Sears Point to qualify in the aesthetics aspects of the track.  Just
compare it to Montral or Suzuka or every other track on the schedule.  It's
dirty and ugly.  I'm not talking about it's racing qualities, but more
saying that it detriments a little the track.

Fran?ois, I think some of the older guys here will think that all of the
modern F1 circuits don't look like racetracks anymore :)

35 years back, racetracks looked like you describe Sears, or worse, and
honestly, for me, those new, clean F1 style racetracks lack all panache
entirely. It's tracks like Sears which make my heart beat faster :)
