LWFF and CH Pedals

by BRH » Wed, 19 Jul 2000 04:00:00

I hope this isn't too stupid a question, but I'm curious.  There have
been numerous posts about using CH pedals with the LWFF.

How exactly is this done?  Do the pedals just plug into the LWFF (as a
replacement for the LWFF pedals)?  Or do the pedals plug into the
gameport, while the LWFF is in the serial or USB port?

I'm curious to see if this combination works with ALL driving sims or
just those that allow 2 seperate sets of contollers ala GPL.

Finally, are the pedals available separately or only in conjunction with
a CH wheel?

Also, a URL with some info about the pedals would be helpful.

Thanks.

LWFF and CH Pedals

I don't know if there's a CH wheel/pedal set, but the pedals are most
definetly available by themselves.
There are two ways in which people seem to do this:

1) Plugging the CH pedals into the gameport, while the LWFF goes into the
serial or USB port (that's the way I have them, and it works like a charm
with GPL, NFSPU, as well as MGPRS2 and F12000.  The game has to support
multiple controllers, AFAICT.
2)  Some actually open up both set of pedals and essentially transfer the
"guts" from the Logitech into the CH housing.  So you get the benefits of
more ergonomic (and IMHO realistic) pedals, while not having to bother with
multiple joysticks.

Transferring the guts, if you can hack it (and there are some tutorials
going around regarding this) seems attractive, but I, for example, don't do
it because I also like to play flight sims.  I wish I could point you in the
right direction, re: such a tutorial, but I hope this has been helpful.

It works both ways...sorta. You can plug the pedals into your gameport and
your wheel into the USB or serial port. This only works only with games that
support 2 controllers. You must have a joystick or wheel plugged intom the
pedals to calibrate them in windows, and if someone was really clever,
they'd figure out how to use this joystick in GPL as a shifter<g>.

The other method is to discard the Logitech pedals altogether and replace
them with the pedals of your choice. This method works in all sims and
clears a lot of clutter from under the desk. I use the CH pedals but others
have used Thrusmaster, Microsoft, Redline, etc. The swap involves removing
the bottom of the Logi pedals and pulling the wires off the pots. Then do
the same with your new pedals. Rewire your new pedals with the Logitech
cable, button everything up, recalibrate in GPL and go racing! Of course
it's never quite that easy<g>, but you get the point. I had to carve out
some of the plastic in the CH pedal base so the wiring would fit, and I also
made short extensions for the ends of the wires with slip-on connectors so I
could reuse the Logitech cable in the original pedals if I wished. If you
are prepared, it shouldn't take more than about 20 minutes to do the swap, a
small powered screwdriver really helps<vbg>.

Steve Blankenship explains it a lot better than I in a reader report on
Alison's GPL site: http://simracing.com/alison/gpl/  Go to Help,
Controllers, Reader Reports. Steve's article is at the top of the page.

See above.

The CH pedals are available separately.
