To everyone,

I have an IBM Aptiva. It came with an Mwave system that I don't know too
much about. All I know is that the Modem and the Sound are run from the
same card. This is a problem because I can not connect at 28.8 and still
have sound. This sucks. Is there a way to get around this.

Second, Whenever I try to connect to my friends MAC, the fastest
connection is 9600 and the delay is .23 seconds which is terrible. I
hope someone out there can help me. I am desperate.

What model of Aptiva?  I too have an Aptiva (S78) and can connect at 28.8
with sound, but this is a pretty new model too.

Connecting at a faster speed is not necessarily going to help your delay.
There is an inherent delay in sending and receiving data to/from modem
that is not dependent on your connection speed.  Not to say a faster
connection WON'T help, but it probably wouldn't scale the way you'd hope.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cheap, do-it-all hardware. IBM has tried
to sell people on MWAVE technology for a long time: "It's a modem and a
sound card. It's a floor wax and a dessert topping." Just not at the same
time, and not that good at either, I'm afraid.

The answer, which I'm sure you don't want to hear, is to buy a dedicated
modem and a dedicated sound card.
