I was just playing and started getting the car to start 4 wheel drifting
(As opposed to the oversteer that most people class as drifting) I'm
talking opposite lock (with continuous corrections of course) and loadsa
throttle and everything - Great fun!

This definitely seems to be the fastest way round turn 8 for me, I could do
it round 4 and 6 too, but found it to be slower than just driving these
corners. Unfortunately I only managed about 2 laps of this before my
throttle spring snapped :-(

New throttle spring, and then back to practicing this new found technique
of mine!

Cool you should try it in a real car its an absolute ball to feel allfour tires
sliding lightly and car shooting thru corner.

You must have a deep pocket for tires

I am talking about four wheel drifts not oversteering

understeer can result in 4 wheel drift, just try that with a front wheel drive
car

Oversteer-  when the grip of the front tires is greater then the rears. the
rear tires lose traction before the fronts.

Understeer_  when the grip of the rear tires surpass the front tires.  the
front tires loose traction before the rears.

Four wheel drifts happen when a car is balanced and the tractions on all four
tires is slightly suprassed.  This is a faster way aroudn a corner becuase the
tires are still addressing the road surface properly.  Four wheel drifts also
have to do with slip angles of the tires. when this slip angle is exceded the
car will not go thru any given corner any faster.

As for a front driver understeering into a four wheel drift, I really don't
think so.  A classic drift pic will show the front tires actaully pointing
straight ahead and car still turning.  It actaully follows the tangent line to
the given circle. Four wheels drifts could actually be desribed as a slight
overrotation of car in a corner too.

If this can be pulled off consistantly on any sim is something I have not
pesonally be able to do but in a real car I have.

Correction, understeer can result in soiled pants (trust me I know) :)

I see someone has been driving very hard into a orner with a car understeering
off the road and into something firm.

 certainly not a good feeling

well, fortunately there was nothing firm for me to hit, but I certainly
respect the limits of the car a little more now :-)

Ah! Lucky for you! My first one was an oak tree, at night in the rain. I was
16, driving my mom's station wagon. Ouch!

try doing a similar thing in a rented Formula Ford.  It hurt my pride and walet
equally
