> If you have not already done so you can get the glide patch for CART Precision Racing at [Apex URL]
This file is a small DLL called triglide.dll
Just drop the DLL into your CPR directory and then select Glide 3DFX in
the graphics options area. This DLL will not work for Voodoo Rush cards.
This DLL is not supported by Microsoft. On my P200 non-MMX I saw some
pretty good frame rate increases.
Whoa, Nellie!! A message from the *Official* CPR website inviting
everyone to come on down and get your (previously deemed unnecessary)
Glide patch. Is this the very SAME Glide patch that, less than a week
ago, elicited these comments:
"Maybe the people responsible for posting this patch at op3dfx.com
(Sander Pillon, Jeremy Allford, Tony Gaylord) should just walk into MS
and take over the board of directors since they care so much about us.
I've had the Glide
patch for a few months so please, no one try and tell me what a service
they have done. I know exactly what the differences are between Glide
and D3D. If these men want to make decisions for a company, they should
earn a few dollars and start their own."
"The people at op3dfx .com had no right to make this file public."
"You are WRONG to post such a file, it's not even an "official" patch!!
And where did you get this file?? Shame.. Shame.."
But I saved the best, of course, for last. From the *official* official
Microsoft *** Theorist Dean Lester: "We did a lot of benchmarking
on Glide (that's what we have been doing for the last 3 weeks) but it
didn't buy us very much - you need a really slow (yes, s-l-o-w) machine
to see any difference at all [Ed. note: Ah, yes, Dean, you were spot-on
there! As John says in his message above "On my P200 non-MMX I saw some
pretty good frame rate increases" Those P200 are so s-l-o-w!].. So TRi
found several other ways to achieve much better improvements - for
everyone.
"I am sure many of the "3D experts" on this NG will cry foul - but TRi
spent weeks on the Glide version and have benchmarked the two versions
of the SAME game side-by-side. Anyone else who has done this much
research and coding in this area is welcome to offer their data - but
the glib "Glide is much faster than D3D" story does not turn out to be
the case. I am sure that won't satisfy everyone - especially those that
love a good MS *** theory - but that's the reality. [Ed. note:
Ah, yes, DeanOn my P200 non-MMX I saw some pretty good frame rate
increases.
"And before anyone posts their MS *** theory <yawn>, go here and
check out a posting that corresponds exactly with what we found - and
these guys have no reason to support MS - they develop a competing
product to our own Flight Simulator ..."
YESSIR, Dean! -- open wide and slip those size 14 brogans into your
yap...again! And you wonder why people mistrust MS? Maybe you could give
your OWN "*** theory" a "well-deserved vacation" after this
one...
This really made my day -- thanks, John!
BTW, I don't know if it's possible, but you should really clear all
those adolescent postings with the insults and obscenities off the Apex
message boards -- it doesn't make your site a very savory place to
visit.
