An explanation was offered in Sept 99 on RAS, albeit ~45 days after I had
said it would be done. I'm sorry that you missed it then and that you missed
my apology above. Gosh, it's good to be back.

You make him sound like Dean from the CPR team
Hmm.. everybody must have missed that post then, since we all wondered
what happened to you. Anyway, let's forget all about that now, it -IS-
very nice to see you back Jack, and I do hope that GPaL will see the
light of day after all.

PS How's the job going you started with back then?
My RAS post from 9/22/99 is below (looks like 45 days was actually 60+).
It's one of several in the indicated thread which I started. Until I looked
at this again, I had completely forgotten about the system crash. It took me
weeks to get my system back into "development state" and I was without a
mail client for a while, I believe.
Anyway, getting some good feedback from some "white knights." We'll see how
it goes.
Thanks for welcoming me back.

GPaL...of course.
The question that remains is when. Sometimes life just gets in the way! But
don't start thinking it's never coming until the site goes down. I never
have convinced anyone to foot the bill for the site, you know! ;)
Apologies to everyone for the silence, but the new job and the major system
crash really did bring me to my communicating and developing knees. Nice to
be back in the neighborhood. Haven't slipped into a Lotus in months!
Can somebody give me a synopsis of what's happened in the sim racing world
in the last couple of months?

Man, this post was made that long ago?? When you wrote that you posted
an explanation earlier, I did think about the 'whatever happened to
GPaL' post. I remembered that post so well, because I was just as
surprised to see a post from you as I was with your re-apperance 2
days ago :)
But I'm amazed that that post was made in 99, how time flies.. :)
I forgot about your system crash too. There were rumours that you also
lost (part of) your source code, was that true?
Later Jack,
Andre

I enjoyed the NTT races a lot too, in fact I still have replays of
some of them I think! Welcome back, Jack. :)

And in post-race interviews, you were always very quotable. ;-)
Weren't you going through school last time we talked? How's that going?
Nice to hear from you!

Any reason you're looking for a particular developer, rather than just
posting the code?
What I'm about to tell you, I'm told, is largely unpublicized, so I'm
revealing this with the express permission of the author.
After initiating this thread, I received an e-mail from Paul Thurston
expressing an interest in GPaL. When we discussed his extensive development
background and he explained that he was involved in the delivery of the
technique for mixing GPL engines and chassis, I knew he had the "tools" and
the interest. Paul went on to explain that he's currently close to beta on a
GPaL-like application that he and a small group have been working on for a
bit now. So I took a look...
With the help of Gary Tall and a handful of other developers and/or testers
(many with names you'd recognize), Paul has developed this little baby
called GEM+ which I think is a real "diamond in the rough." (Okay I'll stop
with the humor.) My assessment: If there is still a need for the
functionality that I built into GPaL, then I think the GPL world will love
this thing. It has essentially all the basic functionality that GPaL had on
tap, and a lot more. One of many inspired things that Paul has done, in
addition to making GPL amazingly customizable, is to make his interface very
customizable itself. So you'll be able to easilly launch whatever you like
from within GEM+. Believe me, it's nice work.
So my bottom line is I think Paul and crew have what you need. I'll be
providing Paul with whatever GPaL code might help, and, if his team's
interested, will assist in whatever way I can...as time permits.
One final note: I'd encourage all of you to respect the facts that 1) Paul
and his team are working hard at bring a quality application that will
further enhance the GPL experience and 2) they have jobs, families, and
lives outside of their efforts to deliver this terriffic new addition. If
you'll do that, I think you'll find that your patience will be richly
rewarded.
Thanks and best of luck to the GEM+ team!
Jack
