You know how it is, Todd...I kept thinking that the available time to finish
it was right around the corner. Don't you write code, Todd? :-)

Jack

About ***ing time Jack. Why didn't you offer this 2 years ago . Im still
amazed that no one went on and made there own GPaL and Im still amazed that
GPL is still number 1 after all this time. I am also still amazed that you
hosted races everyday of the week in 3 different time zones (did you not
sleep?).
Good to hear from you Jack

Todd.
 p.s still racing :-)

Jack is a Legend Eldred, he did NTT before GPL 1.2 with no server cycle
setup to speak of he was there in 3 different timezones every day of the
week. This was before vroc and so it was great to know there was somewhere
to race every night off the week.  The only problem for me was living in
Western Australian, meaning the international finals every weekend were very
very early in the morning.
Its funny I always thought it would be ping time that stopped us from
racing together on a world wide platform. GPL showed that was not so and
that 500 ms could be achieved from anywhere in the world to a U.S race
server for good racing. The thing that has stopped true World Series Racing
is the fact that it is always the middle of the night somewhere in the world
and there is nothing worse than getting out of bed at 5am to try and compete
against the best in the world when for some of them it is 5pm in the
Afternoon and their really in tune.

Todd.

Yes.. I was one of the beta testers.. you posted a message 'GPaL
Tonight!!!' here on RAS, and then mailed me that the release would be
delayed a couple of hours because there was a slight problem with the
installation. That was the last I heard from you untill now. You
disappeared, didn't post hear on RAS anymore, didn't react to my
mails.. The fact that GPaL didn't get released was no problem, if
someone does something for free I would be the last one to complain
about it, but keeping me/our hopes high, and then disappearing without
reacting to my mails pissed me off. Just a simple message of 'hey, I'm
too busy now to finish GPaL' would have been enough.

been enough.<

I apologize to you, Andre, and to anyone else that was waiting on it. Things
tool off in my life at that time at such a speed that I didn't have time to
take a breath. I think I did ultimately deliver that message...just not in a
timely enough manner.

Well your disapperance caused a stir on RAS for a while. At one point there
was genuine concern for your well being, which was quickly replaced by the
sweepstake between filming for First *** part IV or being abducted by
aliens.

If I'd known of your impending return to RAS we could have kept the alien
story going you know :-)

Ok, but please tell me the story behind the 'GPL Tonight!!' message,
then the 'it's only a small problem with the installation procedure',
and now offering the source code to finish GPaL.
What is the current status of GPaL? Is it correct that only the
installer has to be finished?

I'm sorry, but it takes every bit of what - 15 seconds - to come to the
newsgroup and type a simple message that things have changed and it will be
put on the back burner?
I admire anyone that would expend their time and effort to offer a utility
such as this to the sim racing community - for free nonetheless , but I
think not taking a few seconds out of the day to at least let your brethren
know that your ok, and what is going on, was totally disrespectful.
I hope someone somewhere does pick up the gauntlet and run with it, as it
sure sounded like it would be a great program.

And THAT is wrong.

The version of GPaL that I was set to roll out that night was a subset of
the ultimate functionality that the app would offer. It ran fine on my
machine, but when I got you and some other testers involved, we ran into
problems. I attempted to resolve them but simply ran out of time. To give
you an idea, in the interest of getting it to everyone, I think I got almost
no sleep the night before I started my new job. From that point on, things
really got hairy...

Current state? There are presumably still those install issues that need to
be resolved and there's more functionality to be developed. If the
installation issues are resolved, the app as it exists, offers some useful
functionality: car, car type, driver, track, level, distance category, laps,
and AI strength selections, and GPL launching --- think that what's
currently working --- all in a single screen. Don't know how that compares
to what's out there now.

Who cares?  It's history, and a LONG time ago also.  It's just a bunch of
0's and 1's posted on a small portion of the Usenet.  He tickled some

A year or more ago might have been nicer.  There was a time when a man's
word meant something, and even though you certainly owe us nothing it would
have been appropriate to have at least said "I'm very busy and won't be able
to continue".  As it is I wish you the best in your racing and online
involvement, but I think that you've really mishandled the GPAL affair.  If
you'd been yet another usenet dolt (like some are probably calling me right
now) then I wouldn't have been disappointed.

Err.. he got our hopes high after months of hype about GPaL, then
posted 'GPaL tonight!!!' here, then he disappeared.
Is it really that strange that I asked him what happened??
