GP4 performance and patch

by Rick » Fri, 13 Sep 2002 05:53:11

Just bought GP4 - I have a 900mhz Duron with 394MB of ram and a GeForce
Ti4200 graphics card - so why does the game play like a dog.

Frame rate of around 8fps, and that's with automatic calibration. I have
tried tweaking it but cannot get above 10fps.

I have just installed the latest patch, but now the menus flicker
constantly, making it impossible to select any options - surely this game
should at least betweakable to play on my system?

I also get a hell of a lot of judder when approaching any corners, slowing
down to 3-4fps.

I have installed detonater 30.82 drivers, directX 8.1 and the latest
soundcard drivers for my soundblaster extigy, turned back the hardware
accelaration - what next?

What next?

1. Go out and buy GPL if you haven't got it already. As this will run fine
on  your system, and it will kill GP4 even if you bought a P4 2.2G.
2. Give F12002 a try, shouldn't run too bad on yours, with the graphics
cranked back a bit.
3. Never again buy a Crammond written "Sim"

It is a dog.

Eau Rouge. Missing front wing, missing FL wheel.  Flat out with a default
setup.

Sorry Geoff - this one's a clanger

This used to be a helpful group, a long time ago when the animals
could still talk.

Check out the GP4 forum at http://www.sportplanet.com/hg/   You'll
find lots of posts about tuning a graphics.ini-file in the GP4 root
directory. Optimizing settings will make a world of difference,
believe me. The autoconfig sucks big time and will for example
sometimes not enable T&L support.

I've had GPL from the start, for some reason it has become a nightmare to
set up, with axis frequently swopping - turn left to go right, that sort of
nonsense - to be honest, it has become so unpredictable I have given up.

Thanks - I've had major sound problems and corruption as well - I have
turned off EAX but it has made no difference, either pre or post patch. I
have bought all the GP series but this one is so bugged it saddens me. GP3
2000 ran much better, but surely all the reviews said that this version was
much better graphically, with my Ti4200 it should be playable?

with a GF4TI4200 you should be fine. maybe your duron900 is not fast enough
to feed the GF4, but in general it should be ok for normal gameplay. i'm
with a athlon1.2ghz and a poor GF2MX, and even monaco works now. well, i
have to admit it works fine only as long as i'm hotlapping alone on the
track :)
i'd be glad if you can report whether Mike's graphics.ini file was of any
help for you.

have realised they are just fooling themselves
and more importantly fooled by an old
programmer........in dos

the whole fiasco is over

but wait
there is another fiasco about the patch
and another re-patch but it is actually the same
patch.....good god........

options - surely this game

Mike,
Just remove the 'nospam' from my email address if you want to send me the
config file. I've still had no luck, messing around with the settings -
11fps at MOnza with no trackside scenery - I really am thinking about taking
the game back...

However, GPL is like a new game!! Unbeleivable - 35fps with a 20 car field
and full detail - wonderful, wonderful game!!

TOCA2 is great as well. Why can't GP4 come up to scratch? BTW, what is
F12002 by EA like? A better bet if I swop GP4?
