Txl,

This is the official retail (or whatever it's called) release?  Not another
defective beta?

Why would you get a copy of DirectX anywhere but MS site?  Don't be stupid
and only d/l it directly from MS, there is NO good reason to ever d/l it
from anywhere else.  For all current DIrect X d/l's:

No good reason ever? How about being able to play your favorite games using your
graphics board? Microsoft hardcoded support of various features to specific
named chipsets knowing  that boards not released at the time of DX8.0a would
probably have support for those same features.

Cheers,
Jens

Txl...

Evidently you've been a "beta tester" of DX 8.1?  Or have followed its
development.  Can you give us some information about "why" we'd want to
install it?  This is a serious question....not trying to bust your chops
for posting an *unofficial* MS source site for it (who cares anyway).
By the way, I don't blame you for getting a little p.o'd at some of
these posts.

If someone (me) is running N4 and GPL on a GF2-ULTRA and GF3....all on
high-end AMD platforms....is there a good reason to run DX 8.1 now?
This could be helpful information for many trying to make a decision
about this.

Thanks in advance for your information.

Regards,

Tom

Hello

I think Dx 8.0a still has a lot of bugs, i have tried "unoffically" the dx
8.1 beta and after a while it just got "expired" and I had to run 8.1
"unlimited".

I think it is always best to get the latest release even if the performance
is the same, if you install a future game (like WSC ha ha ha) and it uses
the "enhancements" of dx 8.1 (whatever they might be) then you are already
up to date on this....

Besides that I STRONLGY recommend the 21.81 nvidia drivers....

Supposedly DX 8.0 has 320 bugs in it. I have used 8.1 till it expired, then
went back to 8.0, (shrugs shoulders) didn't notice any difference.

Couldn't get the download from the site above, (either to busy or MS shut it
down).

Personally I think NVIDIA (GeFarce) is crap, Voodoo or OpenGL is much better
IMAO.
Looks great in Unreal Tournament, but..........................

The next video card that I may buy will either be a high end OpenGL card or
Maybe a Matrox card.
I remember running Nascar 1 with a Matrox Card using the specific exe for
the Matrox card and it looked pretty good for the time. "Set the wayback
machine to 1995 Sherman"

Anybody in RAS use a Matrox Card?

Last I heard, they are backing away from the *** market and focusing on
business purchasers.  Not that their products won't run games, but the
drivers won't be updated for game compatibility etc.  Matrox makes a great
product, but like Rendition & 3dfx, they allowed the marketplace to pass
them by.
If I was a gamer and choosing a new vid card, a Matrox product would be my
3rd or 4th choice.
