I went through just about all the 3dfx and nvidia chipsets. 3dfx had a head start,
then nvidia opened a can of whup-ass on 3dfx and killed them - with better product.
No other vendor has maintained  a position at the top of the performance curve. The
nvidia viper era hardware was crap, TNT was adequate, GeForce and up is excellent.
3dfx were in slow motion and got left behind. The drivers have always been the
weakest link for nvidia (and the slow development of directx). The 21.81 drivers with
Windows XP are working very well on my PC - both directx and OpenGL work great in
GPL.

The above is a bit of a contradiction. The Geforce cards have the best
OpenGL implementation on the consumer market. Show me one other card
that does OpenGL better. 3DFX had ***OpenGL drivers.

Keith--

I'm running a Geforce2 GTS 64 meg--when I run opengl in GPL at 1280
resolution, the screen is black when I exit the racing screen.  Have
you encountered that, and if so, how did you fix it?  I would like to
run OpenGL for the better visual quality over the D3D patch.

Thanks in advance.

There were two versions of an unsupported beta patch that used to be at
Papy.com for opengl.  However, I have generally got the feeling that most of
the non-3dfx folks have found the performance and visual quality of the d3d
patch to be better than the opengl.  As always, everybody perceives things
a-little differently.

I tried to use this and in D3D had a frame drop to 22fps (steady as a rock
so to speak.)  Usually get 36's.  I run in 800x with a TNT M64 on Win98
using an Athlon 900 & 128mb ram.  OpenGL ran okay, but the menus got all
screwy (the drop down prob.)  If I try to go up any futher (say 1024x
everthing bogs down and menus get REALLY screwy.)  So  I had to delete the
detonators and reinstall.  Back to normal.  Is this just a prob for my
benefit or others had the same thing?

Alan,

I do not have the problem you mention, running Windows XP with the 21.81 drivers
(Athlon 1.4G, GeForce2 GTS 32M, 1G SDRAM, iwill kk266-r, blablabla).

Both d3d and OpenGL work fine with GPL, and I also find the OpenGL to be better
quality. The d3d has anti aliasing turned on, which makes the menu text fuzzy.
