Basically 3dfx version is too flushed out, far too much filtering on the
objects.. you can hardly read the walls on most tracks. The grandstand looks
really grey, and there is also no fogging effects, nothing looks better than
rendition, and almost everything looks worse. It is beta so hopefully this
will be fixed in the near releases.

Luke there is more fog in the game than you could possibly use. You must set it
in the n23dfx.bat file. The syntax is in the readme3d.txt.  Play with the
enviroment settings in this batch file, you will notice many different (and
hopefully better) results. The framerate on my machine went way up from using
the Stealth 2. It does need a little work though, but I'd say it is much more
fluid than the Rendition version. You get a much better feeling of speed. This
may be a strange coincidence, but the first trial runs with it, I broke two of
my records, which doesn't happen much.

What 3Dfx card are you using? I have a Stealth II and a Monster 3D, and
I would like to know if I should try the 3Dfx patch.

I hope you don't believe that Papyrus/Sierra will be releasing another
patch.  I wouldn't doubt if this is the only 3Dfx patch made available
for Nascar2.  If there is another, it will be "beta", and then they
will be pushing Nascar3.

Marc.

I don't know.  Maybe it's my system.  I use rendition also and the frame
rate even in dos mode is way slower.  Very choppy.  This is a beta.  Maybe
some improvements are forth coming.

I agree, the Rendition version does look better, at least on my Thriller 3d. A
couple things you can do though,  is turn on anti-aliasing and fog. The Read-me
explains how to do this.

I have both Rendition and 3Dfx versions, and while filtering is much better
with Rendition, speed and esp antialiasing make me switch over to Voodoo
version ...

Sure I'm running Rend in DMA mode. Of course I don't have any hard evidence
that Glide version is faster, it sure feels like it. I run my P200 at
2.5x83.3 = 208MHz,
don't know if the increased PCI performance makes any difference ...

Anyway, me too am a bit dissapointed of the patch. I expected much better
frame
rates. I anticipated the poorer filtering quality, since it has never been
Voodoo's
strong points. I'm beginning to think that the limiting factor speedwise is
the N2
game engine ...

Of course the Rendition version is going to be a bit better, N2 was made for
Rendition in the first place, what did you all expect? That a patch was
going to blow away the way the game was to be played in Rendition mode?

At least Sierra and 3dfx were nice enough to do all the work for us for free
and even release a 3dfx patch at all.

I guess that since the game engine has a maximum frame rate of 30fps that that
could be a bit of a limiting factor.  I like both versions but I mostly like
that fact that my 2d harware options are now wide open.  Before I HAD to have a
Rendition card.

Yep, same here.  Though the rendition version is nicer than the patch at the mo
I think the greater testure memory of a voodoo2 card will tip the balance.
Shame about the haze though, the fog doesn't match it.

Hi guys,

on my system, it's vice versa. The 3dFX looks much better than the Rendition
version. It's either system dependent, although I cannot explain it, or you are
doing something wrong with SETting the parameters.

Hi Luke,

You gotta be doing something wrong. On my system, the 3dFX patch is pretty
gorgeous, everything is smooth and yet crisp.

The 3dFX patch beats the Rendition version on all accounts on my system. I
can't explain it - but I assume that it's either system dependent in some way,
or you're doing something wrong with the SETting of the parameters.
