Am I the only one or is that common now:

Harddisks make it barely over 1 year lifespan:

IBM notebook and desktop
Maxtor
...

Any brand I should prefer next time?

JensSchumi

PS: Now I know why they cut down the warranty to one year in Asia

I am trying this ... go here
 http://www.dharma-haven.org/tibetan/digital-wheels.htm#Disk%20Drive
and download this Tibetan Mantra gif file onto your Hard Drive... then
every time it spins it will be acting like a Tibetan Prayer Wheel..... I bet
it will last longer :-)    Just an Idea!     jv

> Any brand I should prefer next time?

Samsung Spinpoint, quiet and cool, fluid bearings, SMART temperature monitor
and more importantly a 3 year warranty.

I just bought 3, very pleased (so far).

The downside is they can be difficult to get hold of and generally cost a
little more (here in the UK anyway).

it was too late, and in good faith actually tried this! Poor sucker. :(

I had 3 80-Gb Maxtors die last year.  I've switched to the "Special Edition"
Western Digitals (80 & 120 GB, w. 8-Mb caches) and so far so good.

Oddly, this corresponds to the rampant droppage of HD warranties from 3
years to 1 year, industry-wide.

One of those things that make you wanna say hmmmm.......

All HDD's with 8mb buffer are still 3 year warranty. It's the ones
with just 2mb buffer that dropped to 1 year only.

That statement reminds of a line from one of my favorite movies: "That's not
entirely accurate."

From Maxtor's website:

"All Maxtor products purchased on or after May 12, 2003 will carry the
following Maxtor Standard Worldwide Warranty policy:
Maxtor Fireball?, DiamondMax? ATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty
Period of 1 year.
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus ATA drives that have an 8MB cache buffer AND
capacities of 120GB or greater will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3
years. All other DiamondMax Plus drives will carry a Standard Warranty
Period of 1 year.
Maxtor MAXLineT ATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 3 years.
Maxtor Atlas? SCSI drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years."

A more accurate answer would be that it depends on the brand, size, and
buffer of the HD you own.

For the most accurate answer either look at the warranty that came with the
drive or go to the manufacturer's website for the latest information.

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

After losing a Maxtor after 1 year. (never lost a drive before in 15+
years)  I built a new system with  Samsung serial ATA drive. Lost it
in 2 and a half months.  worked one day, next boot partition gone.

I've lost 3 drive, all Western Digital.  The most recent was a 120GB last year.
My current drives(120gb and 160gb) are Maxtors.
Roll the dice, I guess...

So,
this rules out WD as choice for the next drive.
Anybody has recent experience with Seagate?
