Hi all,

Is there anyone out there who knows how much (using) cable modems will
cost when they finally hit these shores for "mainstream" use? I am of
course particularly interested in costs for the UK, where I live. Today
a friend told me that costs would be a flat rate of 50 pounds a month
with no phone bills. But does anyone else have different info?

Cheers!

If you get Januarys .net mag theres some info about it in there, but 50.00
is what they think it might cost. Worth a read though.

Cheers

Graham

We start a test of Cable modems here in Cambridge in March 99 - Thats the
same price as has been touted around here....Remember though that Cable
Modems will have nothing to do with BT thank god.

Although BT's ADSL will be a competitor to them, so they will still be
around. Be afraid.... :-)

Personally I think 50 would be "okay" for a FAST and permanently up
connection, with no 'phone charges on top of that. I think 30 would
be better, since 50/month is a lot to pay for internet access. The
problem is that since everyone would start running WWW and FTP servers
and we'd all be sending massive online replays to each other, the
strain on their bandwidth would be horrible.

Cheers!

I was under the (urban myth style) impression that BT was a long way off any
mainstream release of anything faster than ISDN? ISDN's still fairly expensive, so
there's plenty of milk left in this particular cash cow!

I am paying $39 for Media One in Los Angeles. It was a $50 install fee
which was about right since the guy had to crawl under my house and hook up
the modem. It is awesome. I have had cable modem for 6 months and have
NEVER been off-line. There is a green light that stays on on the modem and
it's on all the time. You basically boot up into a network... the internet.
150-200 Kbps dowmloads. Pages pop up like they are cached. Streaming video.
Unbelievable multi-player games. You'll never go back.

For sure, and BT will milk it for all it's worth. If, however, they
come under heavy competition from the cable guys then I'm sure ADSL
will be brought to market more quickly.

Right now I think HH is being used to finance BT's system upgrades to
cope with ADSL type systems in future. In fact if anyone in BT is
using their brain they will have ensured that all house cabling and
perhaps even the boxes themselves are ready for ADSL. Then they could
send a bloke along, drink all your tea, eat all your biccies, change a
switch in the box and charge you another 120.

The idea of an "always up" connection is fantastic, and the GPL
leagues which could be run make me weak at the knees :-)  Even full
length GPs become viable, knowing you're not paying pounds to BT for
the pleasure.

Cheers!

That has a familiar ring to it <arf, arf>.

It'll never happen... not for 50 quid a month anyway :-)

>Oh, to only have a phone bill of 50 quid per month.... <g>
>Including the ISDN rental, mine averages nearly 100 per month :(

You ain't kidding. Just got my first 'phone bill with ISDN including
installation and the first three months line rental. HOW
MUCH!?!?!?!??!?!

<Gulp!> No way BT are gonna give up that kind of money :-)

Cheers!

Here in the Netherlands the rates vary pretty much, mostly depending
on how long they've been in bussiness.
In Zutphen it's about 56 installation and 16/month incl. modemrent.
In Apeldoorn it's 129 installation and 26/month incl. modemrent.
In another city (don't recall which) it's 6,50/month, but that's too
unrealistically low and will be upped.
And there's another difference between companies. Some allow continious
24hrs/day connection without extra charges, others start charging a
fee for online hours above a certain amount (like 10hrs).
Also, some will start charging extra above a download limit.

Hehe. I get my bills monthly to spread the pain. Average about 50 a month, but I
worked out that ISDN would push that up considerably for the same amount of online
time. Given that I can connect reliably to many Stateside hosts I decided against
ISDN... maybe I'll change my mind when the rental halves, but not until!

Still scares me when I realise I used to think 20 a month was a lot ;-)
