Cable Modems (UK)

What are cable modems? :o) I mean, why are they faster than 56k modems?
How are they different and do they plug into an ordinary phone line? I
have cable TV - is that something completely different? Is it possible
to utilize a cable modem in the UK?

Thanks in advance for any info... and yes, I have seen 'painted ladies'
on Live Late :o) But only by mistake <GG>

If you know anything about local LANs (using a network card in your
computer) Then you have the basics for a cable modem setup.  The
hardware is a network card, A (cable only) modem, and your TV cable
lines.  The Phone lines are no longer used.  The Cable TV company takes
one of the TV channels out and uses that for the Internet. (BIG band
width).

They can be up to 4 times the speed of ISDN if reports I've read are true,
but even at the lower end of the scale they are at least twice as fast.
Don't know where in the UK you are Rob..are you on NTL Cabletel? if so they
have installed it oop north tha knows :-) but I have to wait till November
here in Cardiff which is one of the last places to get it out of the
original locations Cabletel said they were going to supply. Apparently they
are charging 40 flat free (i.e no call charges) for unlimited access (so
this makes me wonder how well a N3 or GP server would run on cable for a
24hr 7 day week server :-) ) but you also have to subscribe to their cable
ISP for the princely sum of 8 a month.

Wow that seems like a lot compared to what we pay in Canada. I
currently am paying $40 a month for my full cable access. At todays
conversion that is about 16 pounds. Speed is amazing, I regularly see
down loads in excess of 250KBs, and my ping times for *** are
usually around 120mS. If you can afford it, you gotta have it. Once
you do have it, there is no going back  :)

:-) we're just used to paying through the nose for any technology here in
the UK, after ll we still pay for local and internet access by the minute so
40 did'nt seem too bad till your message :-)

It does sound like a lot Brian until you compare it with a 150.00 monthly
phone bill ;-)

Hell this is the UK we are talking about. I'll tell you how much it costs to
fill up a car with gas if you promise to sit down first <G>

And I thought we paid a lot compared to our friends south of the
border.

Oh well, I guess it must be because of all the money you get paid over
there.....  (big grin)

Try cable prices in Australia...

$65 for unlimited connection with 100 MB free download after that its 35c
per MB!!! or a bargain $170 for 1/2 a gig.

Talking about a monopoly...
