Well, as a habitual 8th to 9th place qualifier I've never won a race
against the AI. Nor come close. So tonight  I finally qualify in 2nd
place, coming within 0.04 secs of taking the pole at Silverstone-- an
all time best for me. At the start I quickly drop back to 4th place, but
I'm running clean and work my way back up to 2nd behind Brabham, the
leader. Shadowing him closely, intense with concentration and nearly
colliding several times, I finally get a run on him coming out of
Maggots, slip by on the inside, outbrake him heading into Becketts (Turn
3) and Whoopee! I'm actually leading an AI race! Now I get nervous,
start clutching the wheel too tightly, but I stay clean and am soon
maintaining a steady 3 second lead over Brabham and Gurney who are
fighting it out for 2nd place. One lap to go and despite several close
calls and tardy brakings, I'm still anxiously maintaining my margin. I
come cleanly around Abbott and now I've got one straightaway to go, the
final corner, and I've won my first race against the AI! I've done it!
Until I shift into 5th and in a flash of flame and flying debris I blow
my engine! Now I'm coasting for that last corner, powerless, bobbing my
head frantically up and down in an irrational attempt to impart the
momentum to my slowing car. Suddenly the finish line is before me, but a
scant split second before I reach it, Gurney roars by and takes the win.

By 0.17 seconds.

I'm sure my neighbors must have pondered calling the police after my
anguished cry rang out. Damn that Lotus. Damn GPL. Damn it to hell. I'll
never win, so what's the point in trying anymore? Then again, I wonder
if I would do better with the Eagle....

Tragic!
You deserved the win, I feel your anguish. But persist... better days
must surely lie ahead.

You have my sympathies. I remember my 2nd race at Monza, I battled with
Clark for about ten laps, constantly trading position. I had the lead on the
last lap, but as I came out of Parabolica, the engine spluttered horribly as
the fuel supply gave out. I watched in rage as thev lotus roared past, and I
coasted over the line in silence....arrrghhh!
Yesterday at Zandvoort was just as bad, when I spun trying to avoid an
accident at the bridge, dropped from 4rd to 9th. This after 25 laps (2 to
go), *and* it was a world championship race.... so don't feel too bad. It
can and does happen to us all.

Better days will come, but only if you persist :) (wow, are we
***ic or what!)
I had a scary moment myself at the last couple of corners of Zandvoort
just a few weeks ago. I had driven pole, kept the rest behind me by
keeping my arms wide, so to say, and had a 3 second lead when in the
LAST lap I spun! My heart pounding wildly I could control myself not
stepping on the gas too hard to keep from getting back on the tarmac,
which would have got me 20th place probably. I pushed myself back on
the track and still won with quite a lot of cars breathing down my
neck.
My first AI win at Zandvoort it was! But it cost me quite a lot of
years of my life ;-)

I'm a bit concerned about my neighbors as well, they may be thinking that I'm
beating my wife after some of the rants I've been on. Isn't it great !
I've dabbled a bit in racing in real life, and the emotions and adrenalin
rushes that I get sometimes racing GPL are just as intense. If you can handle
even more intensity join us on VROC, it's a bigger rush with real people.

Oh man.  That hurts.  I think I'd rather be kicked in the "family jewels" a
few times than have my first GPL victory taken from me like that.  At least
you came that close.  I haven't been in the top 10 yet.

You have my sympathy.

Laughing too hard to type!!!!!You should go into comedy between gpl
races, that's hysterical!!!! It is rather the frustration, I bet your
next race after that , you were flat as two day old beer!!!
Anyway, blow off the next race, then get determined , and drive
consistently like you did in that race, you'll win more than you lose,
and you may just win the championship!!As I recall, as good as Clark
was, and is in this sim, he never won every race, and never won every
championship in the years that he drove. Although this isnt real
driving, the frustration factor seems to be simulated as much as the
actual racing has been...One last thought, try finishing second every
time out consistently, and you'll win, because you then will start to
be a real racer, a sprinter to use a label we use in Indy!!!And before
long, you'll steal some races in the last lap. The one's you dont win,
you'll finish second, giving you points, and you'll become a better
driver. Also, I've found that the better, more compatible, equipment
you use(I've been building an entire computer around GPL, ), The less
the frustration factor. Hope this encourages you to get going, and
spare no expense in upgrading your computer until the game is running
smoothly.
    Best Regards,
                  Dave S.

Thanks to all for the expressions of sympathy. Even Randy Cassidy, whom I
hold personally responsible for my anguish.  ;^)  Your condolences have
helped me through this difficult period.
Actually, it was a blast (unintentional pun) almost beating the AI for the
first time only to blow my engine and coast across the finish 0.17 secs
behind Gurney. Yes, GPL must appeal to the *** in all of us. Time to
get back in the saddle...
