While looking through the various controller sites one of them mentioned
that some sims do/may support split controllers. I assume this means you
can brake and hit the gas at the same time (and not have them averaged out
to some value in between on the y-axis, or however simultaneous input's
currently handled). Using a single joystick axis you can only do one or
the other, and I'm sure that in an "authentic" driving model, there must
be an advantage to having independent control.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Not something I'd considered before
tonight, so apologies if it's a subject that's cropped up before when I
wasn't interested :-)
Just to complicate matters, what about clutch control? Top end kit is
starting to support a clutch... but do/will any sims?
Mmm, thinking about it -- and no doubt displaying a poor understanding of
engine mechanics in the process -- would a simple clutch implementation
essentially just allow you to "turn off" the accelerator input while it's
depressed (allowing you to step from one gas setting to another without
passing through the intermediate settings). And if so, could that be of
any benefit in any of the sims we run at the moment?
I guess if GPL modelled a good old fashioned gearbox then authentic clutch
control could be an interesting option... but for those of us who have
trouble rubbing their heads and patting their stomachs this may be a tiny
step too far in the realism department. And I'm sure the majority of
future sims will model modern gear boxes, making a clutch pedal completely
redundant again.
Think I'm saying is does a clutch have any value whatsoever?
Andrew... who should probably think less on his nights off ;-)
