F1GP Driver/Car performance

Hi

I have been playing around a bit with the driver ratings and car HP in F1GP, using the windows editor. I have been
trying to make the drivers as fast as possible, in order for me to have some competition, while still keeping
things realistic. The best way to speed them up, I found, was to increase the AI car grip. However, this seemed to
randomize the drivers a lot, and really close things up. At one track, the Forti outqualified Coulthard , and
generally the whole field is covered by 1.5 seconds!

I have two drivers, for example Schumacher and Herbert, who both have the same car. In order for the game to be
realistic, I have given Schumacher ratings (qual and race) of 1 and Herbert 11. If I set AI grip to 3, then the
results seem to favour Herbert! Does anyone have any way of making the cars really competitive, keeping a
realistic sort of performance spread? In the end I turned the HP's right up, so that I am driving a 650hp car,
with the Williams being a 730hp car. I STILL win, though only on the twisty circuits. I am MILES behind at the
power circuits.

What I really want, is to have the same performance as the AI cars with less grip, AND a realistic spread of
competition, so that I can say that Schumacher will always be 30 seconds ahead of Herbert.

Any comments?

Daniel

Well, setting Schu to 1 and Herbert to 11 is a start.  The only problem
is that by setting Herbert to 11 doesn't mean he will qualify 11th.

What you need to do is set Herbert to something like 26 or 30.  That
doesn't mean he will run 26th, but that he will be that much slower than
Schu.

What I do is to give Herbert a rating of 20 or 30 in qual/race, and give
Schumacher 1. Then Herbert is still fast, but not a front-runner any more.
The rating is somewhat arbitrary, but a significant difference of numbers
will result in a small difference of performance differentiation. The hp
rating is the major determining factor, however, you cannot change the
hp setting among the same team, that's bad. (Are you listening, Microprose?)
We have too many teams with one good and one not-so-good drivers, e.g.
Senna/Andretti in 93 McLaren, Schumacher/whoever in Bennetton, Prost/early
Hill in 93 Williams etc.

I used the average speed during qualification is an indication
for horsepower: F ~ v^2. I rated the Williams at about 730hp and
then calculated the other cars. AI-grip set to 10. Couldn't solve
the Schumacher-Herbert problem though. A possible solution: use
two Benetton teams (both with one driver) and give one (Schumi)
more power than the other (Herbert). After all, F1GP offers more
teams than currently in Grand Prix races.

Well, Daniel, I'm also very interested in this issue... Some three weeks ago I
updated my version of F1GP to v1.05 and last week I started to experiment with
grip and horsepower settings to set up decent races.
(I also compete in the Little Formula Racing Series on the Net:have you
discovered them yet? Check out The F1GP/WC PC Home Page
    http://www.mal.com/~dgymer/home.html         if not)
In my opinion lots of people would profit if we attacked this problem  together
with some other interested racers.
I suggest to co?rdinate our 'quest' in some way: e.g. try to agree about a
certain HP distribution throughout the field of computer cars and then letting
them drive several races and qualifications in accelerated time, and this with
various grip-settings.
If others are interested, let me know!
