512 MB RAM?

by David L. Coo » Wed, 15 Aug 2001 15:58:26

Memory is so cheap these days I'm even considering upgrading my Dell 1Ghz
system from 256MB RAM to 512.  Would there be any real gain to this?  My
video card is a 64MB GeForce 2 Ultra.  N4 is basically it for ***...

Dell memory is cheap?  Can't be that cheap.

Tom -

It might be pretty reasonable.  I notice Crucial 256MB, 168-pin DIMM RAM is
going for less than $40.  Crucial is even offering free shipping until Aug
20th.  Not that I am endorsing this product :-)

I'd call this CHEAP :)

DIMM PC133, SDRAM, PC133 $63.95

David...

You are right......but I doubt there is anything "proprietary" about that
Dell memory stick......you can buy 256 mb, pc133 memory at Costco for about
$20 bucks now.  Even that being said, its worth adding another 256 mb to
your system RAM.  Do it.

*****Word up:

Do not add more than 512 mb of RAM memory to a Windows98, Windows98SE or
WindowsMe system (I don't know about NT or XP or 2000).  It will***your
system up big time.  You'll get "out of memory" errors all over the place,
and DOS apps that won't run......and it slows your computer down by as much
as 30%.  If you run GPL, you can get error messages when launching to a
track.  In N4....you can get booted back to your desktop at random times and
serious frame stutter!  I'm speaking from experience and this is documented
on the MS-KB.

4100s take standard PC133 CL3 SDRAM (the 1GHz might take CL2... if unsure
buy CL2 as it also works at the "slower" CL3).  My 4100 933MHz  came with
CL3 Micron (Crucial) memory.

I only use Micron RAM in my systems but really... generic should work fine.

As usual, Dell screws its customers on RAM pricing:

F1GHz%29&x=10&y=17

Roughly US$40 (free shipping) for 256MB.

That happens because Win9x takes all the ram and uses it for Vcache.
You fix it by adding the MaxFileCache=xxxx (512mb or lower) to the
system.ini under the Vchache heading to fix it. When you do this you
can run with as much ram as your mb supports with no detrimental
effects. MS has an article in their knowledge base on this specific
problem.

I just installed 512 megs of RAM, up from 256.  My VCache is currently
set at 64 megs min and max -- is there any advantage in games --
especially GPL to increase this number to 128 or even 256 megs?

system.ini, not win.ini

It's worth doing, but don't expect ANY speed increase in games at all.
It'll be an advantage only for general Windows 2d stuff, like
photoediting, etc.
