I like PC racing games a whole lot better than games put out by say, Nintendo
(or as my grandmother calls it 9-10-do!), because they let you have a lot
more strategy, and to configure your car.  The one thing that I miss from
the Nintendo type is the need to actually win races to advance (i.e. to be
forced to buy parts from your winnings), and I don't mean just moving up
into another class of racing vehicle, but just buying parts.  Are there any
good PC games that have this, and have car settings like ICR?  My favorite
of the Nintendo is Top Gear II, because it gives you a little of both worlds.
Another interesting idea would be to have to design a car from scratch, hmm,
anybody out there relatively good at this stuff, we may have something here
:-) (programming stuff, that is).

The original Lombard RAC Rally had both of these features.  It also had
the feature where the car was damaged through improper usage.  Too many
crashes without repairs caused a DNF screen to come up. Finishing well
yielded winnings which could be applied to repairs and/or upgrades. Nice
because you needed to budget carefully for both.

Supposedly there is a new version of RAC Rally out in Europe, but I
haven't seen a review yet, or any information that it is going to be
released here.

I saw i a British software magazine a few months back a game called Rally! (I
believe) by something like EuroSport software (I could be way off, but it WAS
a few months ago and I only leafed through it at the local library... er
magazine store).

The screen shots showed the requisite dashboard and the view through the
windscreen was a rather nice looking digitized landscape taken straight from
the RAC Rally.  The night stages were appropriately gloomy, as were the rainy
stages.  Anybody out there know what I'm talking about and where I might find
out more about this?  Note is it a NEW game, not the rally game the other
fellow mentioned.

On another note, Papyrus's box for IndyCar says something about "First in a
series of..."  What's next?  IMSA? NASCAR?

Another note... this one falls under coin-op and it is definitely a game,
not a simulator, but I noticed as I was waiting for a flight out of
Vancouver that Atari had produced a game based on Euro Rallying.  The game
featured a Toyota All-Trac viewed from above.  You had your choice of a few
popular rallies (1000 Lakes, Acropolis) and instead of a co-driver, the next
corner was announced by a flashing arrow on the screen.  If you finished each
stage in the allotted time, you could proceed to the next.  Not a decent
driving simulation in the least, but that didn't prevent it from eating a
good number of my quarters (and almost miss my flight) :-)   I would love
to get my hands on a really good rally game (see above).
