F1RS and variable weather

by Jussi Niemin » Sun, 19 Apr 1998 04:00:00

People have had various problems with F1RS but I've never seen
complaints about rain and variable weather in the game, except the
black sky problem which I've never had.

I have several problems with changing weather in F1RS. I don't know if
it's only with my machine (P200, Monster 3D, 40MB RAM, SB16; swap file
managed by Windows, usually about 50MB). First of all, when the
weather is "variable, humidity 0%", the game seems to crash every time
when it should start raining and I'm in the garage or accelerated time
mode (in pre-race sessions). This happens always when dark clouds have
apperaded to the sky and I'm expecting rain to start. If the game
doesn't crash, the clouds will go away.

The weather seems to stop changing very often, too. Usually variable
weather stops working already in the first session of the weekend. The
sky colour changes but the amount of rain doesn't. The sky should be
dark when the rain is heavy and a just a little cloudy with fog when
there are only a few rain drops. Instead of this, I often get rain
drops from bright blue sky. This happens always when the weather is
"variable, humidity 4% or 8%" at the start of the weekend. Humidity
percentages 53, 96, 99 and 100 work a little better. But once the
variable weather stops working, you have to start the game again if
you want to have changing weather in other races. It's not a graphics
problem because the track surface doesn't dry or get more slippery.

So, has anyone else had the same problem?

You really should have a minimum size swap file of around 120Mb to
get the best from F1RS?

The best thing to do is choose to manually configure your own virtual
memory settings (swapfile) via win95, control panel, system,
performance, virtual memory settings, and set the minimum and maximum
swap file size as the *same*. This  means windows does not have to
think about the swapfile, or change it as resources and needs change,
120Mb is enough for almost *any* program?

This also means less stutters/pauses while windows adjusts the
filesize, cos it doesn't have to anymore?

NB:- To improve system performance it is recommended that the swap
file should be between 2 & 3 times the amount of ram installed, eg:-
32Mb ram = 32 x 3 = 96Mb swap file size.
