I had the same problem as you except I reinstalled my OS from scratch.
I was able to run the game with the CD before the new install with my
new CD-RW or DVD-ROM. The reason was I installed N4 with an older
CD-ROM. Now that I have a new CD-RW and DVD-ROM I can't play N4 unless
I use the NoCD patch. I found a weird work around. I have a dual boot
system (98se and 2k pro) and the OS that I reinstalled was 2k. I still
had the old N4 install on my 98se OS. So, I installed N4 with my new
DVD-ROM and couldn't play it on my 2k OS. I then dragged all the files
from the 98se N4 install which was installed with my old CD-ROM drive
to the 2k N4 install N4 folder. Guess what, it works with the CD now.
I guess the newer drives don't install some files that you need to run
N4 with the CD. And my 98se install had those files installed so it
worked when I dragged them over.

Use DDump to create an image of the CD, and then use DaemonTools to mount
the CD image and install/run the game.

It will run perfectly without the CD, and you'll even be able to race
online.

-Larry

BTW...  Though I haven't tried it yet, DaemonTools was recently updated to
version 3.0.

This Daemon Tools am I'm right in thinking it only works under UNIX?
As that's what I found on doing a search for that program.

If I'm wrong can you let me know if this program is freeware?

I'ld like to be able to run Nasacr4 online without having to load my cd all
the time.

cheers

Daemon Tools is freeware for personal use only.  It will work on
Win95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP.  Their website is http://www.daemon-tools.org

Yes Stu it does work in windows...but it requires a two step process.
Re-read Larry's post and use the two programs to make a copy on your hard
drive, then use daemon tools to run it...
Once done it is transparent, you start it just like a normal program.

No, it's for Windows.  All versions.

http://www.daemon-tools.com/

It is completely free.

Make sure you get another utility called DDump to make the images.  Also
free.

FYI... It also works over a network.

I keep my images stored on a dedicated drive on one of my Win2K file servers
at home.

The only down-side to using the images from a server is that each time you
reboot, you have to re-select the image with the DaemonTools system-tray
Icon.  It remembers the _location_ (and presents the file dialog pointed to
your last directory, even on the server), but does not automatically
re-connect.

I suspect this is by design and for safety purposes.

If the image is stored on your local drives, it remembers the allocations
until you change them.
