I can understand your point, but honestly, I have NEVER heard such
comments, at least publicly. If they were public, it would be huge
news. So, either those people who think such things are keeping it
quiet or it's not as prevalent as you think. Fan opinions are one
thing, owner and other driver opinions are whole different thing.
It's a fact....every series (even sim leagues) has a certain percentage
of drivers who don't cut it. There are outstanding drivers, good
drivers, poor drivers and the slow. I'd prefer to see a slow driver
over a poor driver anyday. But being at the back of the field doesn't
mean they don't belong.
Montoya had no stock car experience prior to the last 3 months. Sure,
there was a prior relationship with Ganassi, but why would he assume
that JPM would quickly adapt to the series? Yet, he got a Cup deal and
not an IRL or CART ride (whichever Ganassi runs).
Or David Gilliland? A single BGN wins somehow elevated him to Cup
status when Sadler left the Yates team? Isn't he white and male? There
were NO other drivers that were better qualified than HIM?
Oh wait, I forgot Archie's "nepotism" clause. David must have
benefitted from Butch's seriously successful CTS/BGN career. Or the
obvious "Dad's Winston West titles translates to Son's ability to drive
Cup cars" transformation.
I am no expert on Bill Lester, but being somewhat successful in sports
cars/trans am shows me a level of car control. Let's also not forget
the lower talent level in the CTS/BGN series drivers. (Don't take that
the wrong way, they'd wipe the floor with me, but compared to the Cup
series). Crocker and Lester are unlikely to be top level Cup drivers
(assuming that is their goal) but might be good fits for the other
series. As an owner running teams in all 3, wouldn't it be the goal to
win often in all 3 series? If Evernham or Bill Davis felt that those
were the best fit, who are we to complain otherwise?
