N99: Tally AI !

by Andre Min » Sat, 15 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi All...

I'm sure that it's incredibly time consuming to tinker with AI using an
LP editor, and it's something I've never undertaken.  I'm very
appreciative for any and all that does try to help the AI situation in
N99.  Some of the "doctored" AI is pretty good.

It seems like Taladega must be one of the toughest to code AI for.  It
would be so fun to have an AI program that closely emulates the
characteristics of the Winston Cup cars/drivers.  Biggest problem seems
to be the way the N99 cars get so s-t-r-u-n-g out so quickly.  Instead
of two, long side-by-side drafting trains racing a few feet apart for
lap after lap, the cars become fragmented very quickly, with significant
separation between the small clusters of cars... and to me it loses the
most awesome aspect of Taladega.  Maybe one of these days... some
tenacious and creative AI Doctor will finally hit upon the right
combination to produce such racing in N99 at Tally.  And should they...
I for one will be eternally grateful.  I can but hope...

Ive improvised here and changed the "skills" part in the driver menu (actually
changed it in NrHQ but it can be done either way).  I just made all the cars
more or less equal.  It works pretty well but is annoying when youre running a
championship season because you have to either A.) use the "bunched up" AI
settings  B.) use the original settings and put up with how they sperad out or
C.) change the settings for 'Dega and Daytona.  If AI came out that eliminated
this i would be grateful.....maybe in N3....come on Papy please give us a
little hint as to these kinds of things.

To all,
I have great .lp files for Talladega.  If you want them, email me.  If I get
enough response for it, i'll post it.
These .lp files allow for great two-wide racing, with the occassional
three-wide racing with the guy in the middle getting left by himself.
Along with setting the individual drivers settings equal, these files will keep
the field as bunched up as possible.  The problem is, when a car falls back he
has the same horsepower as everyone else, so he can't catch the car ahead (or
has a very hard time doing so).
These .lp files also cure the problem with double file restarts bunching up and
slowing down.
If interested, email me at:

I would like you to post the files--or provide them to a good NR99 site
(just remember to tell us which one!).

Marc.

Hey guys,
I've recieved quite a few reply's requesting my new .lp files for N99
Talladega.
I will be posting them at Woof Motorsports at:
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/8734/main.html
Woof Motorsports is an N1 site, but since many people are looking for better AI
performance for N99 I'll be doing a "realism" project for N99 as soon as my
project for N1 is complete.
With my new .lp files and drivers files, the AI will run qualifying and race
speeds very close to those of the WC, BGN, and CTS.  The lines will also be
improved to reflect actual lines driven at each track.

Look for the first AI update for N99 at Woof Motorsports,
Gary Beard
