Sound card problem - you gott'a see this one

I just finshed buying a new Dell R450 decked out really nice.  It has a
Crystal64 sound card which Nascar2 detects as Microsoft Sound System.  When
I hit the Test button it plays sound but an octave higher than it should and
it's playing the sound very fast too.  When I go into the game and try to
race, the sound works but the motor sounds like it's turning 20,000rpm and
the tire squeal effect sounds like someone scraping their fingernails across
a chalkboard.

Anyone else having this problem and know how to fix it ?  I sent an email to
Sierra but haven't heard back from them yet.

Joel,

I have a Dell PII 450 as well, and have the same exact problem when I run
the 3DFX Windows .exe (using a Graphic Blaster Voodoo 2).  I don't have the
problem when I run the DOS Rendition version (using a Stealth S220).  It's
not really a big problem, except Ned now sounds like a girl <g>.

Joel,
My friend had the same problem; he never was able to fix it, although his sound
card was onboard the motherboard.  If I were you, I'd get the real thing: a
Soundblaster card.

I have the same computer and the same problem. However my soundcard
is a Montego. I replaced it with my trusty old Ensoniq AudioPCI and all
is well again :-)

I had the same problem with a packard smell i once had before it
landed 3 floors down on the sidewalk.  same audio chip too i think
what i did to fix it was manually set the sound to soundblaster pro
stereo (if that don't work , try the same but mono).

that should fixer up

Thanks to Dell's misleading advertising, you bought a (likely quite
expensive) machine without a sound card...just a crummy little onboard sound
chipset on the motherboard.  I just installed a SoundBlaster card into an
IBM Aptiva machine yesterday so someone could do voice recognition..she
couldn't understand how her new "theatre-quality" sound computer wasn't able
to handle the voice software.

You got ripped-off if you were told that this machine would be good for
games.  Complain to Dell and then put an actual sound card into the computer
if you want decent sound.  You will have to disable the onboard sound chip
in the computer's BIOS if you want to avoid a serious hardware conflict if
you install a sound card.

Marc.

I may be able to help.  I've noticed the same thing with my ICR2 UNDER
CERTAIN CONDITIONS.  Okay, 1st off, I run the game in DOS mode.  If I
run setup inside of windows, it does the same thing you mentioned.
However, once my computer restarts in DOS and starts up the game, all is
fine.  If you run your game under windows, try running it in DOS mode
(if your game supports this option).

Here's something for y'all to sink your teeth into.  My computer is
almost 3 years old.  Anyway the video has 2MB RAM, right? Nope.  The
video steals it from system RAM.  It's selectable at either 1MB or 2MB.
So, when I play ICR2, I have to go into BIOS, set it to 2MB.  When I'm
done, go back change it to 1MB (I only have 16MB) so that W95 will
operate at anything other than a snail's pace.  I need a new computer!
