For open wheel racing, GPL is still king despite its age. Graphical and
sonic updates (GPLEA), and the mods like 65 and - soon - 69 and 55,
renew its lease of life every time.
As for GTR or GTR, I'd choose GTR ;) You probably mean GT4 or
something, but GTR has a good reputation among *** simracers, if
the multiplayer code gets an update, that is.
RFactor is very commercial, just the input of mods is likely to be
relatively bigger.
RBR has decidedly the best rep ATM, although for vintage rallyin' Rally
Trophy is OK as well, especially now that there are improvements from a
small mod community.
My advise would be GPL as it is still "The King of Sims" and open-wheel
racing on VROC is most exciting online (combined with one of the best
multiplayer experiences and the privilege of having 400+ tracks to
choose from), and if you master GPL you've got a very sturdy ***
simracing experience to go explorin' further in any direction. Besides,
yer average 2 GHz+ pc these days is likely to run it like thunder.
For rallying I'd definitely check out RBR, if your computer can handle
it. For moddability it's probably rFactor in the coming years - unless
West Racing suddenly shows up from fairyland ;)

(GPLRank -24)
LFS
RBR
Without question on all three. (for me anyway)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Commercial (soon to be available) --> rFactor (I play the demo more --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rally --> RBR (Great physics! But I get lonely playing (racing)
than most "complete" commercial games).
or
LFS S2 (great net code, and improved graphics and physics - but looks
like the sound will still be a bit uninspiring)
with myself :)
The current king of racing simulations without any shadow of a doubt.
Quit *** a dead horse.

"GPL doesn't get a mention?"
To which you replied
"Quit *** a dead horse."
The context of that post was relating to the history of sim racing, not what
is the best current racing sim. Do you really believe GPL doesn't rate in
the history of sim racing?
Your next post, some 20 mins later, was in relation to the current best
sims. Once again you are the lone voice repeatedly touting EA's NSR as the
best thing since sliced bread whilst the jury seems firmly out as to whether
this will be patched into something half decent. Hence the irony of
repeating your previous post...
Is it a crime for me to think that NSR is currently the best race sim
out there at the moment?
