GPL: Which details to remove first?

by Andrew Busc » Wed, 01 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi again,
With my PII233 system + Voodoo Banshee, I get pretty darn good frame rates
in GPL with everything turned on, at 800x600 resolution, and it generally
always keeps above 25fps with cars all around me, and pretty much maxes
out when I'm by myself.  However, from the reading I've done about online
racing (which I plan to start as soon as I get a little better) a constant
36fps is highly recommended.  So my question is this - until I get my new
PC, which details give the most frame-rate improvement for the least
graphical loss?  I know in GP2, turning off the clouds gave a massive
performance boost, with little loss graphically - is there an equivalent
for GPL?

thanks,
Andrew

Set the mirrors to "cars only", turn the detail slider down (halfway works
for me), get rid of the light-sourcing and turn off the driver arms (but
you do that one already, don't you?).

You could also run at 640x480 for the moment - it doesn't make a noticeable
difference to the gameplay, but your fps count will rocket. 512x384 does
look a bit rough, though.

Oh, and don't worry about getting 36fps at the start - most people don't.

I suggest taking out mirror graphics first, then setting your detail slider
near the middle.  For mirrors, remember to take the graphics out _and_ also
to set it to "cars only".  You could also tweak with the # of sound.

Yes, Andrew, there is.
Turn off the arms.

If you are not too worried about hi fidelity sounds, find
the  app.ini  in the GPL directory.
change the soundquality figure to 0
This should give you a few fps boost. Turn off dust
and smoke too..

Surprised no-one has mention the "mirrors patch" yet (can find it at
theuspits.com I think among other places). Setting mirror update to once
every 3 forward frames gives you some more fps and doesn't affect mirror
useability too much.

I find setting mirrors to cars only, however, to be distracting so I
only go to cars and track.

As already mentioned driver arms appear to be a big fps hog + detail
slider too far right is as well - I'd keep the slider around 25% from
left.

I originally was running on a K6-200 + V2 and to get good performance
there (25fps-ish) I basically turned off everything apart from track
texture (need the racing grove) + wall textures as I found the
untextured walls along side the track a bit oppressive.

N.b. some tracks (e.g. Monte Carlo) become quite amusing with these
settings as the track appears to float in mid air in several places!

Turn down or off some of GPL's options, Including some or all of the
following:

Reduce the no' of sounds heard, Ideally to 3 or 4.
Turn off the effects in the GPL graphics screen (Smoke, Dust, etc).
Turn off the quality items (Dynamic lighting, etc).
Turn down the detail slider.
Reduce the screen resolution.
Reduce the mirror detail.
Reduce the number of trackside objects.
Reduce the number of textured items (Clouds, Horizon, etc)
Reduce the number of AI cars running.

And switch off car textures in the mirrors. Is quite funny since they sometimes
change colors when overtaking, but will boost your fps.
You could also try this "mirror refresh every 2 frames" thingie. Anybody knows
where to find?
